Space and Materiality – Form Wheel

Having had the mini-critique/discussion in class, I realised I had gone about the assignment incorrectly. While it is most definitely unfortunate, it was interesting to see how my response stood out compared to the others due to use having started from a different approach entirely. The assignment to create a piece of work with 2 elements of the form wheel. I was looking at the reading which had went into much more detail in the examples of each of the individual forms and assumed that the examples were the forms themselves, which is completely my fault and I should have paid actual attention to the wheel itself instead of the pages of accompanying texts. I based my response on the examples ‘tree’ and ‘maze’ which should have been the forms ‘expand’ and ‘enclose’.

I went into this not wanting to create something brand now, but rather to bring out the form of an object that I would normally overlook. A red solo cup was the perfect thing to work off of when I was in my dorm room brainstorming the assignment. A tree has branches and the text talked about how something could be web-like with manipulation. Me taking a pair of scissors to the cup made complete sense. With each cut, the cup began to fray and expand and grow. Joining the edges with another cup using brass fasteners helped me to maintain at least some sort of control over the piece in terms of its presentation.

The text on a maze was the most interesting bit of the reading to me, and I incorporated in a less visual sense. I thought about the maze in ‘The Shining’ where it seemed to be incredibly frightening. Though unsuccessful during the class presentation, I wanted the viewer to follow the many paths that the piece had created and imaged themselves in a never-ending loop as signified by the lips of the cup that was kepy intact.
