Digital Layout – Self Portrait Story/Written Statement, Week 1

A continuous struggle, a constant quest, an everlasting journey in looking for his identity. Or is it hers, or maybe theirs? The case is rested. What is certain is that he is three quarters Han Chinese and a quarter Tamilian. Since when has her heritage become a recipe? Even what was once thought of to be certain is now being put into question, the British came and colonised, the British suffered their worst ever defeat, the Japanese came and colonised, the British came and left. Who knows who their Great-grandparents are, she never met them, he knows little to nothing about them. Father told them that Great grandpa was Thai, but how? He will never know; does she want to know? Malaya is complicated and she rubbed off on her. He is confused, so very puzzled. They moved to England, to find something, to find himself?

England was amazing, wonderful. England was home, but the history of her doesn’t sit right with her. Does she now have 3 homes? But England feels like home, so much like home. What even is home? They’ve never known home. So, to America he went, now a fourth home. Does she call cities, places home too easily? A self-portrait, how should they do a self-portrait when the self is all blurred and confused. It can be done, oh how interesting it would be. A wild idea, maybe not such an insane one – the laws of simplicity and closure. What will I do with them? Oh the wonders.
