Drawing/Imaging – Morgan Library

I’ve been to many a museums and exhibitions in recent years, a lot of those have blown my breath away due to their sheer brilliance. I wasn’t expecting the Morgan Library to stand out to me due to its relatively small size and collection, but I left that Friday night rather intrigued. The interior was absolutely stunning? The main foyer and cafe was designed so ingeniously, I felt free and comfortable; which is incredibly rare for me. Even with massive establishments like the Tate Modern, The Louvre and The Met, I’ve always felt suffocated. The exhibitions felt like an accompaniment to the space with their individual rooms littered about the 2 floors. It felt like someone’s home that I was paying a visit to, which makes sense given the history of the library.

While I was able to appreciate the Guercino show for what it was, an showcase of brilliant drawings, I wasn’t quite able to connect with the works in the same way I was able to for the Duane Michals show. Its probably due to my appreciation for much more dynamic, invigorating works of the contemporary as opposed to works that were made in the more distant past. The vast array of works in the Duane Michals show was splendid, works from artists from all over, working with different mediums in so many contrasting ways really did transport me into the world of Duane Michals. What made it better for me was that I hadn’t the slightest clue who Michals was, and now I will be paying much attention to his works in the future, hopefully there’ll be more to come.
