Bridge #2: Beverley Buchanan Response

Bridge #2:  Beverley Buchanan Response

So far for this semester, I made lots insights which can be classify to three domains, I have lots questions about those three domains such as: how does color affects people’s choices and I want to have a better understanding of color and it’s emotional affect. Also, how does emotions affect our preference for the different kinds of food and the relationship between emotions and foods. Therefore I found some of articles that talked about food, color and emotions such as: Color Psychology And Color Therapy ; A Factual Study Of The Influence of Color On Human Life. “Feeding Your Feelings: How Emotions Affect Eating Habits.” “Mind Over Food | Psychology of Eating.” And “How Colors Affect Our Emotions’ etc. I basically got all the information that I will need for my final paper and project. I investigating my domains by doing lots research such as online sources, books sources and journal article that all about those three domains. Research has found that emotions affect our preference for the different kinds of food. People have emotional responses that lead to different choices of food. Colors have always been assumed to have an influence on our eating behaviors and it have the power to impact our actions and send out different messages, also have the ability to change consumer behavior and perception regarding a given type of food. For this Semester, I believe I already achieved my goal of this semester, which is to discover the connection between food, color and emotion, the project will take performance form to be present. it is for whoever interesting in food, color and emotion just like me. Therefore, I am going to make an edible project to present my ideas and make my audience to understand the way what I understood of my three domains so far, I am going to pick up four lucky audiences to participate with me and to enjoy the “delicious” project that I made for this class.

The one of Buchanan’s work that I chose is called: Frustula, Stones, and Earthworks. It is one of Buchanan’s art work she did in 1970s. It is a minimalist art sculptures by using old bricks and milk cartons as forms, the sculptures are four pieces of red cube stone put in a parallel position. I think her domains were: natural, color and emotion. If there must have some connections between this art work and mine, perhaps the color and the forms can give people sort of grave feeling, since there are two domains about this artwork that are similar with mine: color and emotion, other than those I do not see any similar place comparing with mine work. The perspective of the work different from my own is because of the work I selected is material object, not like mine project, also Buchanan’s work is about natural and how she feels about it, but my perspective is about the connection between food, color and emotion. I was still trying to figure out what kind of form I should to present my three domains by that time, eventually, I choice performance form to present my final project that is how I reconciling the differences between my work and her work, our works both can be performance form. To be honestly, I do not think Buchanan’s work changes my understanding of my selected topics. I am going to make a physical thing that can show my audience the connect between my three domains or a physical thing that I can just put in there and having my audience to explore by visual gustatory and sensation at the time. This piece inspired me that I might can create my project by focus on the shape and color of food, that is my new insights about my domains and my research process so far.

This art work called: portrait of artist as young man. it is a pop art which made by Deboran Kass in 1994. It was made by silkscreen and acrylic on canvas. there are 24 different color combination included. It is similar with mine work because of it have different color combinations in it and each one of them are having different emotion feeling by different color combinations. It relates with two of mine domains: color and emotion. The difference in perspective between Kass’s work and mine is his art piece is a 2D artwork but what I want to do this more like 3D, is a physical thing, you can touch, taste, and see. I learned from this piece that I can make many different color and food combination, put them together and having a clearly visual experience for my audience and let them to compare by their own. This piece inspired me that I can mix different color into one piece therefore to create multiple emotions.
