✫ Space/Materiality: Community – Objects I Admire

For my first object I chose this crescent moon mirror. It is mounted on a stand, and meant to be used The shape is recognizable and someone from any community can relate to it. Even if the shape was unknown, the combination of an organic curve and sharp points evoke a mysterious vibe which could almost make it seem incomplete.

I believe that a piece of mirrored material could have been laser cut to this exact shape. Plastic could have also been cut down to this shape, and then a reflective sheet could have been placed on top. As for the mount it seems to be made of metal. The metal would have been custom-made to fit the mirror, with several trials having been done to make sure the mirror fit without falling.

I gravitated to this object because of my love of the moon. I also like that it is functional, and wouldn’t only be taking up space if I had something like it in my home. I think the “instagrammable” aspect of the object is also appealing, and I would love to take pictures with this mirror.

As for the second object, I chose this cube. I notice that the object is clear, and it has text covering it. Although I cannot see it, the text might be telling a narrative, or it could be a collection of poems. The shape is common and rigid, but the transparency would allow it to interact with its surroundings.

I think that it might be made out of clear plastic. Just like the previous object it could’ve been laser cut. The text seems to have either been printed or pasted on. There are no tabs present, so the cube was probably glued together. If it isn’t made out of plastic it could be glass or some other transparent material. Judging by how the text connects on the cube, it would have been put onto the material first, and then the cube might’ve been scored and folded.

I chose this object because of how it could interact with the objects, I was curious if something could be put inside, or it could have some sort of function like hold up books. Contrary to what I said about the previous object, I do like objects that are solely aesthetic, and do not have a function. It might just look good to look good, which is a way it could garner the attention of many communities. I also like the typography, and I think it seems out of place for the object which re-contextualizes it.
