10/31/18 Class Reflection #SustainableSystems

During class today we watched a short film on the hurricane that effected Puerto Rico and then we watched a longer film on climate change. I learned about Fort Mcmurray. It was crazy to see the workers who are making insane amounts of money but don’t care about Fort Mcmurray at all. Then Beaver Lake (in Canada) had a spill, in the film its apparent that people didn’t give much thought to it. A lawsuit was set against the Canadian government. The native Indians wouldn’t let the Canadian government get away so easy! Along with that, I saw the huge problems that come with the mining in Greece. Same as with the power plant in India. People all over the world resist this new environmentism, but the governments have more control. The fight is hard. Air pollution in China is another intense issue. In the film it showed that in one year 175 days had air pollution (smog) so bad that children couldn’t go outside. All in all, it seems to be capitalism vs climate change.

Sad Tree – Becoming NonHuman

-When choosing a non human object to become I struggled with few different choices. I went to Washington Square Park first, the next day I went to Stuyvesant Square Park. Immediately I realized a huge problem. The trees in Stuy Park were covered in litter. Their bases were barely visible.

– “I can’t breathe. I look so ugly! All this trash on me is depressing…”

– My plan is to create a garbage shoot right at the base of the trees. When people throw there trash on the tree it will drop down into the garbage shoot. The shoots will be emptied by regular sanitation workers

Twitter Reaction – You Buy A Purse From Walmart…

After reading this article, I was disappointed. Almost everyone has heard about the insane working conditions of people over seas. Not to neglect that here in America the same conditions still exist, just not to the same extent. I was intrigued by the author taking the time to actually investigate the matter and try to do something about it instead of just writing about the situation. It’s extremly sad how secretive China is when it comes to forced labor. No one should be forced to work 14 hours + a day without a break, no matter if there a prisoner or not.

Reflection on Lower East Side Fireboat House

Saturday, October 6th I visited the Fireboat house and learned surprisingly a lot about animals. I expected to learn just about the ecosystem but I learned more. I saw a rare type of snake and we got to get up close and personal with some marine animals. All in all the trip was interesting. I learned that under The New School there is a river that flows. Saturday, October 6th I visited the Fireboat house and learned surprisingly a lot about animals.
