Perspective drawing: New York Library

For this project we went to the New York Public Library for a class trip to study perspective especially first point perspective drawing. We had to chose a specific setting inside the library and draw it with a sharpie on acetate paper. We were asked to incorporate atleast one human being to understand depth, height and perspective even better. Through this assignment I also learned some new vocabulary such as the vanishing point, picture plane and eye level point.

This is the place I chose for my drawing of first point perspective.

Then we were asked to trace this acetate drawing on a mix media paper which I did by sticking this acetate on my dorm window and I stuck my mix media paper over the acetate and used the window as a light box to trace my drawing. I learnt about this technique in this class and I think this is a great way of tracing drawings when light box isn’t available to you plus I found this method to be very creative.

As the completion of this assignment was open ended as to what medium we wanted to use to finish the assignment. Mediums such as watercolours, pen and ink, markers , illustrator were allowed. I traced my drawing using pencil, scale, t-square and a compass to make the arches. Since drawing perfect arches was difficult I decided to complete rest of my drawing on illustrator.

Traced drawing using rulers, t-square and compass

In this transferred drawing my vanishing point was not set properly as some my line placements did not align with it therefore, I scanned my drawing and using tools in illustrator such as ruler, pen and shapes I transferred the drawing with perfect arches. To personalise my drawing, I made a snake crawling through the light of the library to make an illusion of this library converting into a place similar to the movie Night in the museum where animals come alive and roam around in the night. I placed the man at the right side because my vanishing point and the light and snake were in the centre and I wanted to make a man as a way of distraction so the eyes could wander all over in the drawing.

I used my previously made patterns to differentiate between different shapes and I made a new pattern for the snake as I learned about this skill in my previous assignment and thought this would be a great opportunity to use the acquired skill. Another reason I chose illustrator as my choice of medium was because I started using Illustrator in this class and I liked using it so I decided to further improvise and learn new skills on this software.
