Rebel Nell’s jewelry was the most outstanding piece that drawn my eye from By The People. The first impression of Rebel Nell’s piece is a fragment of an ore that is crafted as jewelry. Some of the jewelries are connected with the necklace chain, while some are presented without the chain. The surface of the jewelry have marblings and the shapes are not homogenous; each pieces are unique and have different shapes and size. Moreover, few pieces contains circular and rectangular holes that are randomly place around the jewelry.

The reason why I thought this piece was interesting was because of its choice of creative medium. Amazingly, the jewelry is not made from jewel, but it is made from graffiti, which is writing or drawings scribbled, scratched, or sprayed illicitly on a wall or other surface in a public place. Amy Peterson found a shard of graffiti on the way on the Dequindre Cut underpass, she explored graffiti, and revealed the layers of graffiti and therefore decided to use it for her enterprise. I first thought this was jewelries that I can easily find on jewelry shops, but I never imagined that this would be graffiti. Peterson is a designer who is truly aware of the surrounding and knows how to utilize the materials effectively. I thought using graffiti to create jewelry was a creative idea that no one would have thought. Furthermore, this pice contributed to make ‘A Better America’ by questioning and suggesting the existing challenges and by suggesting plausible solution addressing the problem.

The method of research that might have been necessary to create the Rebel Nell pieces would be first of all to understand the societal problems. For example, Peterson should have been aware of the problems of gap between the rich and poor and gender inequality. Secondly, primary and secondary research such as meeting jewelry experts and reading books might be essential to learn how to produce jewelry. Lastly, communicating and interviewing the people is critical to understand what their needs are and to come up with a systemic plan to effectively support the women.
