Week 2 Journal

432 Park Avenue is a beacon in midtown. The building has double height spaces without walls to help air flow through the facade taking away the damage of lateral winds, The great height presents this building from miles away. A building this tall contains a vast amount of square footage and its main program is residential apartments. 432 Park Avenue, constructed within the past 5 years, has current sustainable systems embedded in its design. This building brings up an issue in Architecture and Real estate. This building is one of the tallest in the city, with a vast amount of space, yet working class people and families cannot afford to rent or own space in it. Rent can go up to 20,000 a month. Owning a space in this building can cost millions. The inflated prices leave vacancies in the building , wealthier people are looking at the spaces as investments or a secondary space.

The building itself is centered around midtown, and draws people in, however it creates a divide between classes. Sustainability and living in the city is being reserved only to the wealthy despite having enough space to house all classes. Energy waste could be lowered tremendously if we were able to house people in sustainable spaces. It is a waste of thought and material if the efficient space isn’t being occupied properly. The business side of these spaces are setting society back. The divide of classes continues to transcend time.
