Journal Week 8

Ornament is an element or technique that can be used in architecture to draw attention to a building. Ornaments aren’t acknowledged in modern architecture but it exists  A modern day example of ornament is retail stores using lights and flashy signs to attract attention and draw people in. This is seen on fifth avenue’s apple store, as the facade is a glass cube with a single apple logo that is a light. This type of ornamentation gives the freestanding glass an epicenter that acts as a point of gravity. Ornamentation has been happening before modernization. Ornament, in architecture is any element added to an otherwise merely structural form, usually for purposes of decoration or embellishment. Three basic and fairly distinct categories of ornament in architecture may be recognized: mimetic, or imitative, ornament, the forms of which have certain definite meanings or symbolic significance; applied ornament, intended to add beauty to a structure but extrinsic to it; and organic ornament, inherent in the building’s function or materials.
