“Both interior decoration and manners were believed to express the progress of civilization.” Studying an Interior and the objects inside of it , we can find how people lived their lives. If we use the home as an artifact we can begin to investigate the time period, culture and narrative of the people who inhabited the space. Material of the home reveals when a building was made. For example, if a building has a large glass facade it’s safe to assume it was built during modernization. Material ages over time. The statue of liberty Is Cooper , it changed from brown to green overtime. Key moments in material give us a sense of time. Also furniture can reveal a lot about culture. Small things like utensils can reveal culture. In Asia people use chopsticks, America uses forks. If you look at photographs you can tell someones. Race, and family make up. An interior is a glimpse of someones life.
