Group Project: Cow Heart

Final Installation

Initial Beginning

Initially, our group brought up environmental issues, AIDs, and animal abuse. Eventually we all decided to continue with the environmental impact cattle have on our environment, as well as briefly discussing their mistreatment.

Research

Together, we watched “Conspiracy” to better understand our topic. From the documentary we gathered a vast amount of information on the negative environmental impact cattle have on our Earth. Barbara had this idea to use the laser cutting machine to create a hanging layered cow out of plexiglass. Kat, Barbara, and I decided on including a projection of facts or some kind of dystopian projection.

Process

Due to the fire in the Parsons building and schedule conflicts, we were unable to use the laser cutter. Our alternative was to create a cow out of cardboard and other waste products. After a full day of working on the cardboard cow, we realized that it wasn’t sufficient enough. While Kat and I were in Blick, I had the idea to cast a real cow’s heart with a interactive meal display. Since casting was too expensive, we decided to use a real heart as part of the installation piece.

The beginning of our original idea of the cardboard cow.

In this moment, my group had the realization that the cardboard cow wasn’t going to work. From that point we changed our plan.

Summary

Overall, I’m proud of the outcome of this project. It was quite difficult due to the lack of facilities (since the Parsons building was closed) and given our conflicting schedules. Barbara lives far away and Kat had work. The whole process of this project made me understand that you may have a specific vision for what your artwork should look like, but it doesn’t always have to end up with every detail you imagined.

Our final with the lid on.
