Vitruvian Dress

This dress project has been an interesting experience for me-this was the first time I have designed and created a dress on my own. For this dress project I choses the Vitruvian Man by Leonardo Da Vinci. I chose this painting because since I was little I’ve seen this painting everywhere I go and I didn’t know the name of the painting and information. I thought this painting was very interesting because it was Da Vinci’s way of describing the human proportions. It also has a mathematics theory towards it that people can’t solve. It was a very mysterious painting because it didn’t have much information and I wanted to challenge myself on something Mysterious to give me a unique design. What I did to create this garment was I did some sketches on it and my idea was to create the sleeve into a bell shape I included double interfacing because I wanted it to be really wide to show the arm movement like the painting. My idea for treatment was to machine stitch the whole dress, I wanted there to be a lot of lines in it because the painting shows a lot of line details. I decided to get a really tan color off 100% cotton because the painting was on a tan paper. During the process it has been really difficult for me since I have never sewn or draped before. I have never experienced draping and pattern making before and I have such a hard time trying to figure out how to do them. I have created a bunch of sketches and I have been trying to figure out how to drape them but the more I try my design changes. My first idea was to create a split dress but later on from all the draping my design changed to create this unique dress. A couple of things I would like to fix to make my dress more fitted will be to fix the collar it is too high in the back. Also hem the entire garment more neatly and fix all the darts. I wanted to do my photoshoot at Grand Central because I enjoy how the color of the place matches the color on my design.
