Ways to Create Value Using Pencil:
Create a column of 9 one inch squares.
Adjust the pressure of pencil, begin with a soft pencil for darker values
Create a light layer of dark, apply more consecutive layers, change the direction of hatches
For lighter values use harder pencils
Save one square as the white of the page
Also, review the pdf, and create a drawing of an object of personal significance in your sketchbook. Focus on the shadow and shade in the shadow shapes only (leave the light the white of the page). This is called stopped modeling.
