Final Project

I made seditionaries shirts, that inspired by Vivienne Westwood collection in 1976

I loved the culture and the history of the Punk and Rock music and I always get inspirations from them. I started to listen to rock and punk music since I was young because of my father’s music taste. My father plays drums and guitars so I was interested in that genre of music. I started to listen more when I got in high school and I had depression at that time and I got into the movement of punk culture that happened in the 1970s in London because of the unbalancing and anxiety of the government the societies. I got attracted by the movement itself and also the musicians and their fashion as well.

I sometimes wear punk cloth and I tried to inform my outfit. During the textile of this semester, I learned a lot of stuff. We started with burning fabrics and see what happens to each different kind, and we did felting next. Then we did weaving, embroidery techniques, dies, and knitting. On this final project, I used two techniques that I learned throughout this semester that are knitting and fabric die techniques. I did tie-dye and knitting on the top of the shirt.

I started to make the shirt with cotton Muslim fabric because I wanted to make it rough and delicate as the real seditionaries shirts. Even though I haven’t seen real seditionaries shirts by any chance,  but I was imagining how does it flow and look. also, I tried to make it my own style so when I sew, I made the pattern of it from the beginning and tried to make it unique.

after I made simple shirts, I put the knitting that I did by my hand, which idea was inspired by the shoes that I always wear and the Mihara Yasuhiro long sleeve shirts that I have. I tried to reform the design to the shirts. then I put the knitting piece on the top of my shirts and I started to think about the colors and how I can die it.

I went to the store to buy the material to die the fabric and I decided to die half of my shirts with tie-die techniques which I learned in the class and I loved the effects of it. Then I decided to do half of the body and one sleeve with the techniques. I used rubber bands for tied it before I put it into the pod. After I put the fabric I waited around 40 mins. and checked how it affected. and I rinse and washed it by warm water. I died the old bag that I have and damaged too much too with the same color. I bought the bag when I was in the third year of middle school and I used it all time. It was originally black and white but by the damage, it looked grayish color so I decided to die it to red.

In this project, I had hard time working on the hand knitting piece and how I could put into the garment, I was bigginer and sweater was too hard for me to make for the first time, then I changed to the seditionaries shirts. It fits my body well, and I loved how tie-die turns out. Punk culture is always in m,y mind when I make my design and it is the style that I want to make in my life, so the design background is very personal and related to my suffer and depressions too. I always have hard time to think about my future and be anxious about it. but then I tried to use the energy to make an art piece.
