Repair Project Part 1

2) After seeing Gen’s demonstration, Kintsugi does interest me more. Kintsugi is very attractive to me because of all its history behind it. After knowing that the process takes over 6 months also every tradition and custom behind Kintsugi, it becomes more sacred and respectable in my mind. I am not sure if I have the patient to enjoy a slow repair process, because I usually don’t have a lot of patience; however, it would be worth to try because I loved the aesthetic of the repaired ceramics. With the long process of repairing and waiting, they look very philosophical and meaningful in my eyes. I do consider this kind of work as art, because of all the customs and traditions behind it, as well as how beautifully objects changed into after the process. When something takes years for a person to practice, and also months to make can explains a lot. If you are to think about it in modern eyes, it is not so creative, however, if you consider it with all the history, you would acknowledge that it is such a marvelous and inventive design and method, it is both aesthetic satisfied and useful. While it took a lot of luck, resources, and time for people in the past to discover this method of repairing and lots of cultures were generated by this method, I considered Kintsugi as something great.

3) I think this concept is a very broad concept which it doesn’t have any standard or restriction, rather it is a goal that encourages everyone to achieve. Responsibilities that people should take care of are to be sustainable; to take care of the earth; to save future resources; to design new methods of creating energy; and lastly, to educate the next generation of responsibilities. As my personal responsibility, I need to be sustainable as an individual. I don’t think people today consider their behavior before they act at all, reasons for that were that I think not a lot of people were not being informed, also no they don’t acknowledge how serious this is. At the same time thinking about the future is limiting to a lot of people so people tend to not have the considerations.

4) 1. I am going to repair my Parsons tote bag, it has some ripped up holes on it.

2. I use this bag for school or to carry school stuff almost every day, at the same time, I would like to keep it for longer because it represents our school, I want to keep it as part of the memory after I graduate.

3. method A: redesign the bag with the aesthetic of the ripped holes.

method B: sew the ripped part together.

4. Materials that I need for the reparation are needle, thread, scissor, cotton.

5. I don’t have the skill for repairing, I need to learn how to repair canvas cloth.

6. My choice of material is not harmful at all, since it doesn’t require a lot of amounts, and that is only cloth and thread that I need.

7. I expect to take 30 minutes to do the repair.

8. I would like my repair to last 10 more years.

9. I remember there was a girl that wanted her backpack fixed, this process can inspire students that they can repair their bag themselves.
