Thesis – Annie Zhang

During mid-Febuary of 2019, the Fashion industry was devastated by the news of Karl Lagerfeld’s passing. Social media instantly erupted with “Rip Karl Lagerfeld” instagram posts and stories that morned the loss of the great fashion icon. However, many people were also angered by how social media had disregarded all the controversial statements that Lagerfeld had made throughout his career. This began the debate of wether it was right to support someone who held on to such an old, conservative mindset. Over the past decades in the fashion industry, Karl Lagerfeld had established himself as one of the most influential fashion designers in the industry, however, his standings on certain situations has steered many people the away from supporting his talent.

Fabric and Thread – Annie Zhang

My location for this project was The Bean, a coffee shop close to my dorm. When I was observing and writing down my field site notes, I realized how much everyone was in their own world. It was interesting to see how technology and the internet has wedged itself between any human connection deeper than ordering a cup of coffee or small pastry. I created a piece inspired by how the internet and technology divides people into their own world along with bringing everyone together at the same time.

I used the wifi signal as the foundation of my design, as each “world” is decided by the curved lines of the wifi signal. When I though about creating different worlds, I was instantly drawn to something that resembled the underworld, the earth and the sky. These worlds contrasted the most with each other, however, at the same time they are still connected together by nature.

The base fabric was created with two pieces of muslim that I glued together on the edges wit white glue.I played with texture by using both embroidery thread along with felt. I used the embroidery thread to create detailed images of deep and dark caves in the underworld section along with the trees and leaves in the earth section. I wanted the sky portion of the project to feel light, airy and fantasy like so I used pastel pink, purple, and blue felt to create that feeling. I used buttons to add more variety to the texture. One thing that I struggled with for this project was embroidering the patterns. I didn’t realize how much time it took to embroider without an embroidery pen and many parts of the project took much longer than I expected it to take.

Interconnectivity sketches

My field study location was at the bean coffee shop. When I was there, I realized that there were two types of poeple there. Ones who were meeting up with friends and ones who were doing work on their laptops. Everyone was in their own bubble, not really interacting with anyone outside their circle. As I was brainstorming about the interconnectivity inside the coffee shop, I realized that everyone was so excluded from each other, and the only thing that really connected people together in the coffee shop was the internet. So for my bridge three I want to explore how the internet decides is into our own universe, yet still connects us with each other.

Self Portrait/Identity Photos

For the image of my side profile with the mouth of a cat, I wanted to express my spirit animal by connecting part of their face with mine.

The picture with multiple versions of me walking on shopping bags, I wanted to express my addiction to shopping. How sometimes, I need to just get one item, but somehow, the more I walk around I end up buying more things that I planned on buying.

In the last picture, I wanted to show how I daydream and the process of it. I always think of some sort of alternative world where nothing would really make sense. Or sometimes, I like to add to the boring reality that I live in.

In Class Collage

In this collage, I translated my mood of the day into an image. I used the the image of me walking to express the pace and rhythm of my day so far that day. It starts off big and bold and fades to more of a “fast paced rhythm”.
