To what extent do our influences shape our personalities? Where do we begin and our influences end? Further more, within work what percentage of our ideas are truly are own and not simply modifications of our influences? The project that I am proposing will explore these concepts through the use of sound and installation. The sound aspect will represent the melding of two beings: the artist and the influence. The sound will represent the “call and response” relationship between an artist and their influence. Ideally, these two roles will initially be clear to the listener, and as the sound progresses, begin to meld into one being with who is who becoming less and less clear.
As for the installation aspect of the piece, I would like to create a video artwork that can be projected on a wall playing alongside the sound. Visually, the video will be representative of the sound and the progression of the relationship between the “influence” and the “artist.” This idea will be represented by showing two individuals or forms existing as their own, and as time goes on, they begin to morph into one individual or form.
