The Project Reflection

My name is Yu Tong Tiffany Ling, and I come from Hong Kong. My major is communication design, and this is the first year for me to be in Parsons.

In order to make this project, I learned different ways of making model, such as 3d printing, laser cut, and so on. I also learned how to use wire to make an electric circuit to achieve my goal. This is one of the challenges I met that it was so hard for me to not let the circuit to be a short circuit.

On the other hand, I also put some design on this project. At first, I did not plan to put any decorations on my project, but I did at the end, in order to made my project look less empty. Michelle gave me lots of advises on decorating the model, which were helpful to my project.

1. How could we intertwine wind and solid structures as a way to emit a ‘natural sound’?
2. The rushing of the subway upon arrival and departure creates a gush of wind when entering the subway station. How could we combine an instrument of noise with the relatively strong winds that are exposed when the train is near.
3. How can the peculiar architectural designs around and possibly within the station be used to hang or securely place objects of interest.
4. How does the echo play a part within the space we decide to implement our instrument. Is it a loud echo or not?
5. Is it possible to implement lighting in a way that creates a different experience for whomever crosses through or passes by our object of creation. Light and sound? Solar panels to power an electrified instrument.
6. How can we use create something light enough to be hung ?
7. What materials should we use so its light enough to transport to this station?
8. When interviewing subway users should we ask them what materials, sounds, or colors they would like to see or hear?
9. Should our piece be interactive with subway users or just something to look at?
10. Should our design contradict or blend in with the environment of the subway station?
11. Is there any purpose for choosing the location for recording sounds?
12. How could we create different sound with our architectural to fit in different meanings?
13. How can we link the sound and the architecture together?
14. What is our purpose of measuring sounds on subway station?
15. Should we keep the original sound track, or edit it?

Bridge Project 1 – Part II: Public Space

This project is to use some images that I took in the interior of the public space to make. I made 3 levels of the geometric boxes. The first level is a square with 4 images, the second level is a triangle with 3 surfaces of images, and the top level is an upward triangle with 2 surfaces of images. There is total 9 images, which has different topic in each level. The bottom level is composed by 4 images that taken from my friend’s house, which represents the private interior. The middle level is composed by 3 images that taken in the Museum of Art and Design, New York, which represents the public space that without any private spaces. The top level is composed by 2 images that taken in the gym room of my apartment and the restaurant, which represents people still have their own private space even though they are in public area.

Image 4: The back.

My plan of this mockup is to make a architecture that to be shown in the museum. I first printed out the images I want, and then I sticked them on the hard cardboard and cut them off. After these, I used blue tag to stick them together to form the shape. In order to fit the color style of the project, I chose blue-color tag as the adhesive.

Base on the inspiration from Derek Adam’s work, I chose to take these image that more relate to our daily life that most of the people will do, rather than the fancy places.

Bridge Project 1 – Part I: Interior Images

This is the assignment for Integrated Studio 2 to take several interior images. I picked these places because I like the style of the place or I always go to the place everyday.

Image 1.1: Izakaya in St. Marks Street. (The decoration of this izakaya contains tahe mixture of Japanese culture and modern style. The light effect there is awesome.)
Image 1.2: Decoration in my friend’s house. (This interior set is a model of CPC major meeting in 100 years ago. It restored the scene of the meeting, which is amazing.)
Image 1.3: Yoga Room in my apartment. (I go to the gym room in my apartment everyday. This place is meaningful to me.)
Image 1.4: Corridor in my apartment. (I travel this corridor everyday I go out from my apartment.)
Image 1.5: Nusr Et Steak House.(This steak house is filled with beef.)
Image 1.6: Art Gallery. (This gallery is in somewhere in Brooklyn. I think the combination of the pattern of the floor tiles, the white wall, and the art pieces is cool.)
Image 1.7: Friend’s house 1. (This is the spiral stair of my friend’s house. He is an architecture. I love the way he made his stair.)
Image 1.8: Friend’s house 2. (This is also the spiral stair. But this time I mostly focus on the neon light decoration.)
Image 1.9 – 1.11. (These three pictures are taken in the Museum of Art and Design.)
