Bridge 5: Reflection & Moving Ahead

Introduction

Hello, I am Ellie, and my major is fashion design. I am a traveler, and I love fashion styling and taking pictures. Now I am living by myself with two Chihuahuas.

These all are my favorite materials. I like to cover my artworks with masking tapes. I also like to use recycled objects such as used paper, metal, cardboard, wood, plastic, glass, book, and magazine. Then I like an elegant style, so I love using shiny stuff such as glitter and also used jewelry making such as a bead, buttons, and embellishments. I also love colorful pieces of material, so I like watercolor, acrylics, color pencils and color pen as well.

All my artworks are about me. The size of almost all my project is vast size. I do love telling my story through the artworks. All of the concepts of my artworks is odd and a little bit abstract.

Artist Statement

As I told you before, the concepts that I explore in my work are very personal. My practice is focused on expressing my personality and a style that best reflects my interests. I would like my art to share thoughts and feelings that I am unable to articulate with words.

I had serious worries of my own that are unknown to others; the sources of my trouble were about deciding between my reality and dream. In my case, in the weighty sack, there were failing to fulfill my parents’ expectations, a fear of failure, living a different life with others, and lagging behind others in society — actually, there were some more, but these occupy most of my worries. All these my troubles have in common is that I was very conscious of the way other people are looking at me like a weird person, which I realized now that actually, it is entirely not necessary in my decision. As I slightly mentioned before, I want to say to individuals who have confused like me from the past that we do not need to care about how and what other people think about me and my future. No one is going to live my life instead of us, so we have to keep focusing on stepping our dream even if some disturbing things go on like incessant interruptions. Therefore, these two projects exactly show who I am and who I want to be. I am going to keep working on my future projects with my own style.

Bridge1

I made this video based on the letter that I wrote to my future self. I firmly believe that my dream will come true in my near future. I want to be a world-famous fashion designer in the world in a few years if it is possible. If I have a chance to make a video again in a few years later, I would love to try it again with using clothes made by me.

I got a terrible time to make a video. I am not also good at using a computer, and it was kind of my first time to make the video. Therefore, I spent a lot of time for making it, and I failed several times to create it. However, at least, I enjoyed a lot and had much fun while producing the video! Besides, by writing a letter and preparing to create the video, I just could take a long hard look at myself. I felt that there are strong connections between the charter to my future self and the video of my future, so I think I could save a lot of time for making a plan. When I wrote the letter, I felt incredibly excited about my beautiful future, and I could have high expectations of my great future as well. After that, while I was making my video, I just reached a climax of my excitement. Again, it is just imagination, but it reached still peaked of my happiness. I was enjoying the time to do the Bridge1 project and having a lot of fun.

Bridge4

My question is “why is the Seer by Giorgio de Chirico an excellent example of Metaphysical art?” After researching, I knew that because it is dreamlike and uses shadow and light in a way that creates the strange effects so definitive of his abstract style. So, I want to express through the mask because the mannequin is the main model in his artwork. The white and some white shine things represent light and his dreamlike. The gray and black color are for shadows. I stick many colorful eyes together for making eyes, nose, and mouth. First, it is because I want to give it more abstract effect. Then also because the shape of eyes is the circle, and its represent his never-ending life. Actually, in here the eyes are not eyes function here. These all eyes describe his same never-ending life, and he cannot escape from the same life, and it is repeated again and again, so the big circle is the world and the small black eyes are him. It is moving, so it means he tries to escape from his life, but he cannot actually. Another reason why I chose rings is that I think eyes, nose, and mouth are all related, so what he sees, what he smells, and what he eats are all about his feeling and experience. For the last, the background I created is for making it fancied artistically.

I used clays to outline first, then put some plaster papers. After that, I painted white as a based color and painted the outline of the mask with silver and black. My original plan was no background and eyes, nose, and month. But I think it is too empty, so I just decided to make this black background and features. I had a tough time to stick all the woods together and to hang the mask in the background. I put shine stuff in the background and the mask as well.

Future work

I really love the idea of making clothes and patterns that embrace individuality, rather than creating something that is trendy. In fact, as a designer, I would like to work intimately with each client and help them express themselves in the future. I hope many people will feel a deeper connection with my collections than just superficial beauty. I have my own aesthetic taste, which makes my work unique, but at the same time, I also wish to create designs in the future that will resonate with people. I would like my designs to tell people’s stories and make them feel emotional. When brainstorming ideas for artwork, I will try to come up with designs that can be thought-provoking. I want to create art that asks questions and makes others think in a new way. I will also spend time outdoors and explore new places when sketching in order to find new perspectives. I think I am more likely to have productive ideas when experiencing new environments, than sitting inside of my house.

Thank you!
