Grace Paley, “Travelling”

Grace Paley’s short story, titled “Travelling”, is a reflective recollection of her interactions with racism in America during the 20’s as a traveller. Through short sentences with a simple language structure, Paley poignantly sheds light of the theme of defiance in the face of corrupt social norms like the anti-black sentiment, and how that deeply impacts one’s sense of self and familial relationships. Rather than coming across as preachy and self-applauding, this piece is just a simple reflection of how her interactions with racism and her behaviour in the face of it has shaped her life as well as that of her family’s.
