Seminar 2: Strategies of Home-Making

Strategies Of Home-Making

Comfort

One of the primary strategies in home-making that I identified through my research is establishing a feeling of comfort. Conventionally this is done through soft materials that support a persons body, like pillows, throws, couches or rugs. Large knit cushions and plush throw blankets are especially associated with a feeling of warmth and comfort, and of support and protection. All of these feelings are essentially what a home is supposed to encompass since its primary function is to the provide a safe shelter to a person. That is what this picture evokes within me – it establishes a ‘cozy’ feeling hence making this space feel like home. This reminds me also of how in the texts that we read on home-making, Karen makes the motel feel like home for her son by filling the place up with pillows.
