The Body: Fashion and Physique

The Body: Fashion and Physique explores the complex history of the “ideal” fashion body and the variety of body shapes that have been considered fashionable from the eighteenth century to the present. I think the colors they used for the exhibition are all the colors which can do better delivery of their purpose and main ideas to the viewer. By using all very pure black color on this garment, I think we can see the body structure very well, and also it is good delivered. Regardless of age or sex, black color has been loved and so popular by many people so far. So I strongly feel that the black color represent either man and woman, so this is a good choice to use black color of it, because the body beauty is not only applied to woman, but also to man. I think curators want to let many people know and considered about the relationship between fashion and body politics, so just included it in the exhibition because it is the most perfect delivery method and garments to express their main idea. The famous magazine, Vogue, said “We tend, in these times, in this country, to think of a beautiful body only in terms of a perfect ‘figure.’ A ‘figure’…is considered good or bad only as related to clothing generally, and current fashions specifically.” For me, I feel like the body is considered in relation to fashion. Perhaps the most important takeaway from this exhibit is that while codified ideals of beauty exist, the only real way to free the fashionable body is first to free our minds.
