Reflection for the interview

Rita Zhou
Interviewee: Yang Shao

I think this interview inspired me a lot, I found lots of unexpected details of people’s daily dress practice. I think the theme of my interview is time. Since Yang apply in several positions, for example: she is a mother and a business women, therefore, she has very limited time compared with me. Her daily dress routine are highly effected by time, she plans for her look before get ready, and she always choose clothes that are comfortable, easy to put on,  and can fit different styles. Also her way of clean up her closet is very efficient since she can’t put place too much attention on her closet, just like mention by Sophia Woodward from her book Why Women Wear What They Wear: “ The lack of time to organize the wardrobe often leads to clothing being stuffed rather than folded of items such as handbags and shoes colonizing the undesignated areas of the wardrobe 1.” Time not just effect people’s daily dress practice, but also the way we clean up our closet, in Yang’s case, she kind of sort out her clothes every time when she put them back, so she don’t need to arrange them regularly.

CLothes that Yang wears most recently
There are many unexpected ideas arise during the interview. For example, Yang cares a lot about the fabric of her clothes, and they are mostly in linen or cotton, since they are natural fabric and comfortable.  I think her choice is effected by her positions a lot since she works for long time everyday, she need clothes that are comfortable. Also, yang has a dog, so she needs to takeover dog out every morning, so she needs garments that she can wear when she run and walk with her dog. Pet makes her more care about our relationship with nature and sustainability in my opinion since she get connection with nature more often than other people who doesn’t have pet in my opinion ( she walks her dog everyday at park near river). I do care about the fabrics of my clothes also, since my major is fashion design, but in the opposite, it is hard for me to think about it in a sustainable way, I would just choose garments that made with special fabrics, some of these fabrics might not even environmental friendly. Another interesting idea is that my mom sometimes choose Qipao as her outfit when she meet her clients( who are mostly comes from foreign countries) . She wants to show her culture from her dress. Since yang is a businesswoman, it is important for her to let the clients remember her, Qipao is great way of showing herself and make her special compare to others. I think I have the same idea with Yang. I choose a lot of garments that have Chinese elements on it. I think culture impact people’s dress practice in different positions since this identity comes with everyone, and kind of effect us through culture and society.

Yang’s QIpao
This interview makes realized that the relationship between body with clothes is beyond daily dress practice. It has more mental meanings than I used to think. We wear clothes at the same time create memories and experience different things with them, they are one of the most private and inseparable things for us. Therefore, people normally won’t throw their used clothes away ( like Yang and myself).

This is a picture from Saint Lauren 2017. The model in this picture doesn’t show her face, but you can define her gender from her look: a super mini dress with a pair of high heels. I think this look reinforce her gender in a traditional way, since pieces she wore are typically womenswear. The only masculine element in this advertisement for me is the leather fabric for the dress, but associates with the decoration of ruffles and the mini dress form, you can hardly notice this masculine element. Also, even the pose of the model is not very exaggerate, but you can feel the sexiness in it. Her slightly curved and twisted waist, and her super mini dress makes people have the urge to spy under her skirt. This is the reaction we normally have for women. I think this advertisement not just imply her gender facially, but also stimulate our reaction towards it in a psychological way“ From a perforative perspective, gender can be described as a way of repeatedly styling the body”, just like this advertisement, the model is actually performing, and the dress is a costume to help her express her gender. I think gender is styling this dress also. This look is appealing for audience because of model’s female character. If a man wear this look and do this pose, you might feel it is weird, because this is not the performing way for man. This is the typical style for women in a traditional way. I Saint Lauren always gives us the feeling of cool girl, and this look not just express the female character, but also combines the sexiness and uninhibited of women.

Aphorisms: I think they are conclusions drawn from investigations, researches and experiences by experts who in specific field.

1.Fashion moves in shape and time, it shares in the complexity of physics and mathematics, making patterns and networks, forming mazes and constellation. Through its forms we have an opportunity to reunite art and science and to heal the rift of the two cultures.

In my idea, I think this aphorism express the meaning that fashion has very complex forms, and it can related to many subjects, or say it is a combination of many elements, like mathematics and science. Also, fashion is a special way to express art, at the same time express science. Actually, I really agree with this idea, because I think fashion is much more complex than we thought, it is not just about turning fabrics into clothes. It is more about constructing clothes in an artistic way. In order to achieve this goal, it needs the participation of other subjects. For example, some garments can be made in special material like recycled fabric which is cultivated from mushroom, and this is science combines fashion. Also, some clothes are made perfectly symmetrical, it includes knowledges of mathematics. As a result I do agree with this aphorism.

2.Fashion can be about confirmation, of self and others. But it is also about anxiety, ambiguity and worry. As and aid to understanding psychological complexities it is unsurpassed.

I think the author tries to show that fashion can contain many emotions, and it is a good way for people to know and understand others’ feelings and thoughts through their fashion. I think it reminds me of a documentary of Alexander Mcqueen. It mentioned that his work is a way for him to express himself, and to show what he feels. I think this idea is similar with this aphorism, and I do believe it. Since fashion is created by designers, and designers often incorporate their emotions into their work, unintentionally or deliberately. Or say in other perspective. People have their own fashion code, and that is also a way to express themselves and their feelings.
