My inspiration comes from lights in the subway station, I really think all lights in the subway station were considered thoughtfully before place them: the place, the direction, and the color. Therefore, I want to express lights in a new way.
This is the sketch of my design
I want to combine white denim with eyelet together, also leave the edges of fabric be rough.
I made the pattern first
before make the big model, I made a small smaple
then make the actual size model
After making the model, I found some problems with my pattern, so I made some small changes.
- Make the shoulder strap longer for 2 inches
- Change the shape of the bottom of the bag
Here is my final model
The mini bag can be placed in different ways.
Then I place my pattern on the fabric, and cut them all, also mark some signs.
Then I practice place the zipper.
Here is my small sample of the mini bag.
Maps/Diagrams of rooms
These are my first draft
I made several changes
- Clarify the meaning of different elements
- Change the layout ( including titles and diagrams)
- Clarify locations of rooms.
/Room at NYC/
/Room at Hangzhou/
I want to use similar elements to express different systems. I use different colors to express different smells in my room at NYC, also use different colors to represent different emotions in my room at Hangzhou. The darker places means the feeling or the smell being more fierce. I use a variety of ways to express colors, like using digital ways and water color. Colors blend together at their edges because I think no mater feelings or scents, they are always combined. For lines, the amount of lines represent different things. Lines in my NYC’s room diagram means the level of my emotion, and audiences can compare the level of my feelings clearly. Also in my Hangzhou’s room diagram, curves are in different thickness and amount, because people can distinguish the meaning of each easily in this way.
At last, I found an interesting result when I compared my room at Hangzhou and NYC. I found that I place furnitures in similar places in these two rooms unconsciously. I did this because I have strong emotional connection with my old room, and I am already be familiar with the placement of furnitures. Therefore, I use the red pen to mark the similarities between these two diagrams, also point out the connection between these two rooms.

/Room at UYC/
At last, I wanted to make the diagram be more diverse, so I combined two diagrams at one picture.
Comments about Arakawa’s work
The diagram that I choose is about lemon. The first reason I choose this picture is because Arakawa’s work usually doesn’t be so colorful and abstract like this. There are many questions under the painting, one of them is “How not to think in terms of estimation but to deal with ambiguous zones as basic units”. I think he really obscured the boundaries and standards for people to observe things. Lemon as a object has many possibilities, but we won’t observe or think about it carefully. We don’t regard things about lemon as a accurate standards normally, I think because we “believe” it is not a unit nor a standard. I think he made this diagram not just to point out the possibilities about lemon, but also question audiences’ “believe”, and let them think about the boundaries which limit their imaginations.
Circus Project Reflection
My inspiration comes from the knife throwing, I choose it because of the excitement and the danger. However, I watched a knife throwing’s accident video. The knife dropped on target girls head, I want to reflect the danger and unpredictable characteristics of this performance, so I used very vibrant color on my work. I did some research about the performance form, in the movie The girl on the bridge, I learn the death wheel performance form. In this performance, the target girl need to be on a rotating wheel, and the knife thrower will throw knives around her. In knife throwing performance today, performer will add acrobatics in their performances, so I combined Inverted the performer to throw the knives.
I used wires to make the performers because wire is stable and easy to build shapes. I also made costumes, I create the red and black red velvet tube top dress for the target girl since their job job is to attract audiences. However I made her very puffy skirt in order to keep knives away from her body, this is a protection that used by target girls today. For the knife thrower, I use a bow tie to indicate his gender. Actually most knife throwers are male because they are more concentrated.
I used wood to make the bracket because it is very light. I used to use magnet to make the wheel in order to connect the magnet knives and the wheel, but I failed, because magnets are not strong enough. I used form board instead, and change the knives into darts. I used the principle of slingshot shot darts by elastic bands. In order to rotate the wheel better, I used lazy susan turning table. It is easier for me to place it, and the wheel can turn smoothly. I adjusted my project a lot of times, for example, the hight, the color, and the material to create a real performance.
There are always be difficulties in a project, but the point it to solve them all, I really feel a kind of satisfaction after finishing the pieces. Patient is what I learned from this project. Also, I also learn many things behind knife throwing performance. There are so many difficulties need to be solved to make a perfect show. There are so much practice need to be done to avoid accident. There are so much passion in their heart. Only hard working make perfection.
Final work: Culture Issue
Inspiration: There is a this is very cruel ceremony called female circumcision, it “ritual cuts or removal of some or all of the external female genitalia”, and mostly happened in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, it is harmful for girls both for their mental and physical health. There are over two hundred million of women were forced to accept this event. People today started to face this cruel and obsolete ceremony, and many organizations around the whole world are trying to resisting this horrible tradition, and this is where my inspiration comes from. I think there are too many darkness in this practice, and it is just too hard for me to paint the painful behind it, so I want to describe this social problem in another way, which is to show the power and strong of female in this ritual.
This is my sketches, I made a plan based on the knowledge that I learned in the semester.
For the lay out of the whole page, I used golden ratio to create perfect proportion, I placed there main part of the painting at three golden ration spots. In the whole painting, I used not a single strait line, but all curves to express the feeling of feminine and softness.
I layered the flower on the portrait, I paint phalaenopsis orchid for many reasons.
This flower represent feminist, especially, purple phalaenopsis orchid means dignity and respect, women in this event don’e earn the respect and dignity which they deserved, because of the effort many people have made, a lot of women were saved, they earned their respect and dignity, so I used this way to represent the feeling that many women are saved and protected, and more and more women will be saved in the future, the power of resisting this senseless ritual will be stronger and stronger in the future, and that also the reason why I placed all phalaenopsis orchid around the portrait, and spread them all over my painting.
I used color to reflect the coldness of the reality, and the warm of people’s heart protection, and strength.
I wanted to create emotional figure, so I took many photo of myself on the dark ness, and I tried to express the feeling of sadness, helpless, but full of love and strength. To create this feeling in my painting, my color is in saturation which is sad and helpless, but the hue is warm which represent the love and power of woman. I used transparent light to blurry all the feelings, so the emotion shows deeper. I create shadow in my painting and made a representational portrait, but I still soft the edge, to create a mystery and sad feeling. Even though this portrait just has half of the face, but I still want to create a perfect proportion using the rule of golden ratio.
This is my background for the painting
In the middle of the painting, I used water painting to create human figures. After many practice, I tried to paint a set of abstraction figures. The figures look like a kind of shape instead of fierce out line, this is the way I create mystery feelings. These figures are embracing each other, they are protecting each other, the gradation of color from dark to light shows more emotion.
At the right of the painting, There is another set of human figures. I used water color to create this set, I emerging the edges, so figures can connect with the background better when I layer these two elements.
But I used two different ways to paint it, and choose the better one.
.I combined all these elements and here is my final.
Then I create an extra painting, this version express the feeling that woman today are able to defend their rights, and be more free to express themselves.
I combined two painting together at last to show the hope.
Also to show the feeling that women will be stronger in the future.
My book’s name is “blue house” written by Beidao, a poet in China, he wrote this book in American. He felt deep loneliness in this foreign country. I am in the same condition, and I feel lonely everyday after I came to New York, and I can feel the deep connection with him.
This is my final work, I think loneliness is like a shield, It protects people from forgetting who they truly are, and where they come from, so I make the booking into a round shape. Also, I crossed all words about loneliness to express the feeling of shield. The loneliness comes up at anytime, and it will embrace me suddenly, and that is the reason why I made this shape. I also want to express the invisible characteristic of loneliness, so I used silver powder. The way I use light is also to augment the feeling of loneliness
