Aphorism #1: Fashion moves in space and time. It shares in the complexity of physics and mathematics, making patterns and networks, forming mazes and constellations. Through its forms we have an opportunity to reunite art and science and to heal the rift between the two cultures.

This aphorism discusses the complicated relationship between art and science in fashion design. It says that fashion design is concerned with both art and science. For example, it is concerned with physics and mathematics (science) and pattern-making (art). It is through the process of fashion design applying this knowledge covering art and science that bridges art and science together. I agree that art and science are often mistaken to have little relationship with each other. This aphorism highlights the fact that fashion design is a process involving different subjects and disciplines. Therefore, fashion design is multidisciplinary and multidimensional. I think fashion design not only involves physics and mathematics and art design. This is especially true if fashion designers make a determination to use fashion design to raise the awareness of or solve some social problems such as environmental problems. For example, more and more fashion designers are developing and using new materials that reduce the environmental harms to contribute to the sustainable development of the fashion industry. However, I agree that science and art are interconnected with each other when it comes to fashion design and fashion designers often need to apply these two cultures to facilitate design better fashion works. For example, fashion designers can avail the golden ratio to help design the patterns more attractive and harmonious.

Aphorism #2: Fashion can be about confirmation, of self and others. But it is also about anxiety, ambiguity and worry. As an aid to understanding psychological complexities it is unsurpassed.

This aphorism discusses the relationship between fashion and human psychology. The argument “fashion can be about confirmation, of self and others” alludes to the fact that fashion and clothing are often taken by people as a means to express their personal identity and show to others what kinds of people they are. For example, an introverted person, male or female, may be less likely to wear too fanciful and personalized clothing, because they do not want to stand out from others in the public. This is the reason why many people tend to judge others from their appearance. Therefore, I agree that fashion is about identity expression and confirmation of self and others. In addition, this aphorism also argues that “it is about anxiety, ambiguity and worry…as an aid to understand psychological complexities it is unsurpassed”. It is hard to understand whether fashion is the best choice to study and understand psychological complexities; but fashion can actually help understand psychological complexities. What people wear on a daily basis often needs to satisfy people’s psychological need. Therefore, different stakeholders in the fashion industry other than consumers need to understand different aspects of human psychology to improve their products and services.
