Perishing & Surviving

As a remake of the famous Sunflower painted by Van Gogh, originally a unique portrait of sunflowers, its dim yellow lighting still recaptured as it set the tone for the entire painting, brought into the modern context of emerging environmental issues and awareness.
I find it interesting how we are damaging the Earth everyday, consuming energy, producing more trash, polluting the air. This has became such a huge problem that businesses incorporate the encouragement of recycling and eco-friendliness into their brands.
I placed a fresh yellow flower, growing out of the water contained within the reusable water bottle, with teared thin plastic packaging accompanying the flower and the leaves that lie below.
Nature and man-made trash exist at the same time in our daily lives. They intertwine into each other.

Unpredictable Rain in Paris

Focusing on the composition of the shower and Tracey Emin herself being portrayed in Tracey Emin’s Sad Shower in New York, I found the shower as an ironic shelter that might not be fully protective at all times. Just as an umbrella does when I am in rainy days, sometimes the rain and wind pushes stronger against my tool, leading to impactful lessons that I learn from an umbrella, applicable in everyday life situations.

The Guided Tour

The guided tour includes an introduction to the history in Saint-Germain accompanying jazz music from the 1920s, sharing traditional snacks that contain a sketch and a quote from the famous artists, such as Picasso, and more who have visited one of the cafes, and handing out black and white photo frames from the 1930s to the 1950s for our fellow classmates to find the right angle of the café from the present with the past and take a photo with them.

Chinese & Japanese Landscape Paintings

Traces of traditional Chinese landscape paintings are found in traditional Japanese landscape paintings. Additional elements include more color tones, portraying the mountains in a setting around general lifestyle with farmers and huts painted aside.

The Bohemia of the Boulevards – The Poster

The A3 poster is an extra large deluxe version from the A5 version used during the guided tour. With the fancy huge poster containing a picture taken in 2018, a pair of hands holding the photo from the 1930s to the 1950s, with a cut-out hole in the center, you can try to match the angle from the present and take a new photo, adding a new layer to the previous frames.

The postcards came in the same sizes, providing the possibility of connecting the past to the present. This is another way to approach the past, getting back to writing postcards, perhaps sitting within one of the cafés.
