REFLECTION

I approached the project very directly when realising the main difference in Jenna, which was also what we talked most about during the interview. I immediately started using collage to jut down my ideas and to play with messy vs. tidy. I enjoyed focusing on a person and the persons identity. I love reading people and this was nice because we got to analyse a person through environment (studio) and personality (interview, seminar). So you had the big picture and could decide what you wanted to focus on. The most challenging part was time. Not that two weeks aren’t sufficient. I actually usually like focusing on one project for a short period of time and then giving it my best. But here I all of a sudden had a midterm, 2 other projects and a lot of reading to do, so my time was definitely limited. I would have loved to have done some more prototyping and playing around with the concept. The overall pace was a little fast – like I said with other things I had to get done too. I found collaboration with my subject essential in the way that I needed to see her space and talk about her personality in order to learn more about Jenna.

Spectrum – open-ended vs. clearly defined design briefs: I’m definitely on the open-ended side of creativity – I like to be able to work on it and expand the idea through myself. I’m not very good with boundaries, because it tends to stop my creative process. I’m really adaptable as a person, so if I have to meet certain criteria and follow ideas, that might not be my main focus or interest, I will and of course put my best into it as well.

I feel like I achieve a certain contrast in the piece which I was working towards. And I’m happy that the main focus, contrast, isn’t stolen by the colourful middle. I would like to bring the depth, that comes from taking a photo of elements on paper, into some of my future work. I think that way of giving it tactility and depth. You feel like you can pull it of but if fact you can’t.

Some of the things that we were taking about during presentation of the work was that there is no weirdness about the fact that her body is split in two. It feels natural. Everything that is in between is suppose to be there. Someone also mentioned that the middle seems like a painting. Not vulgar despite of its color. And gives a sense of flow, shapes and different spaces. The size helps to see Jennas body. The white shapes and spaces fall out of the photograph. People in class were convinced they could pull the white out of the picture. And I used textile in a different way but tactility is still there.

STUDY OF DIVERSITY:

Play (prototypes) with 2 sides to her personality and color diversity. She is very colorful underneath her clothes – underwear – and is very neutral in her normal clothing.

I wanted to focus on her different sides: Tidy vs messy and/or neutral (both in white room and clothes) vs. colorful (both in art and underwear).

Result: wanting more of a difference. White vs. color.

ASPECTS FROM INTERVIEW (Phase 1):

2 side to her personality: messy vs. tidy. Messy when creative. Tidy in her environment and structure of life. I want to bring out the two contrasts. They are quite different and the 2 side don’t really mix. She loves art but hides all of her supplies under her bed to make the room look more put together and tidy. Focus on the contradicting factors in her personality and environment.
