IS1 Museum Visit

Title, artist, date of work(s)?

No title and date, I think (I looked for it but couldn’t find it), Sophie Calle

Why are you choosing this particular work?

I chose it because I fell for the surfaces of each one and the set up spoke to me. And the backgrounds of the tombstones. The photographs are quiet powerful and has one main focus, the tombstone with father written on it. I also chose it because I’m in general more into conceptual art and newer art so a little unconsciously I decided on the Sophie Calle exhibition quiet quickly. Also stuffed animals freak me out a bit, but her animals don’t look like real ones, as opposed to much of the rest of the museum. Somehow the main reason became because of the fact that I couldn’t read the underlying message that quickly and I needed to stand in front of it and analyse what was going on, whereas most of the others were a little more accessible.

What is the meaning of the work in your opinion?

The purpose of what I understood of the French is to reflect on life and death as well as how we are treated when we die. It’s also a symbol of fathers and their role. Symbolising death, time, memory, place in this world after, and is universal, in a way that we all have a father, and therefore can maybe all relate to it. Theres a french text, conversation, fairly close to the art piece and a part of it, it think – so i took a picture but im not sure how connected it is, except for the exhibition as a whole.

How does this work relate to the permanent collection of the museum and/or the temporary Sophie Calle exhibition?

The work in general is about death in all the museum. The messages and these tombstone have a strong connection to death. It’s sort of her modern take on the rest of the museum. I found the rest of the museum was very interesting though, especially the setup and chill feeling over it. It was decorated like most of the museum weren’t artefacts, but just someones home.
