HIDING IN THE CITY 83, SUPERMARKET I, 2009
CONTENT: It is in a supermarket. The photograph is taken in front of the cup noodle section. The walls are white as well as the floor. One the first shelve are there cup noodles in 7 different colors; 3 different kinds of red, 3 different kinds of green and purple’ish. The other shelves has noddles and chips in small containers, could be Pringles. They are in the same color scheme but has a pink and an orange color as well. The pink color also sort of sticks out from the reds and greens. Then there are storages on the ground under the shelves. 6 boxes of extra chips and noodles. The cup noodles are in rows of 4 with the label facing forward. There is a big contrast between reds and greens in the photo. Complimentary as well. The colors are very strong and powerful and stands in contrast to the white scares between them. And the he is standing completely in the middle of the photo covered in the colors of the cup noodles. He is almost invisible except his shoes sticking out at first. They are white as the floor but their shadow seems to make it obvious that he is there.
COMPOSITION: It’s symmetrical, straight and taken with a frontal view. There are 4 columns in the 2 shelves. The shelves are white and that creates this wider white space between the 2 shelves that is a little to the right in the photo. All of the cup noodles and chips are perfectly aligned. As well as the shelves. The only thing not aligned are the boxes underneath the shelves.
CONTEXT: It’s taken in a supermarket. I think it’s main purpose is to hide in plain sight. Everyone goes to the supermarket and we all ignore each other and continue our daily to do list and everyone is in their own little world. Which makes it possible for everyone to hide there as well. Because it’s in a supermarket it is very relatable. It could also be commenting on mass production and the use of food. Do we really need 9 different kinds of cup noodles?
CONNECTION: I love the symmetry and the powerful colors in the photograph. That’s what makes the photograph very intriguing and mesmerising. The symmetry also gives it a soothing feeling as well as it being clean, straight and forward.
COMMENT: Strength: The color combinations and contrast between. And his upper body is perfectly made. Weakness: His shoes are showing to much in my opinion.
