Post 7 – STUDIO THESIS PROPOSAL

Chosen idea: Weightlessness

HOW CAN I CREATE A SERIES OF WEIGHTLESS GARMENTS THROUGH STUDIES OF WEIGHTLESSNESS?

Moodboard – air:

Moodboard – light:

I want to explore the different ways of experiencing weightlessness in space and in water as well as study how a garment can be weightless and also we felt as being weightless? The main elements in our society that are weightless are air, light, sound and maybe body paint in different ways, because it weighs something but you dont experience its weight on the body when drawn on. I’ve decided to focus on either air or light – maybe I’ll include body paint – if I decide to do a series of different types of weightlessness. We, as people, have this dream of being weightless and this element is something I want to explore, why is it such a desire? Together with research from seminar, I want to demonstrate the difference between the illusion of being weightless, the dream, and the actuality of astronauts after some time in space, being weightless. In studio I want to focus on imposing weightlessness on the body through garments. When talking about air, it would be a shape in a light fabric or plastic with air shoes, that blow/pump air up in the dress/shape making it weightless, since the fabric will no longer touch the body but air will be the main material. With light, there would be projections of clothing shapes on a naked body, standing close to a wall, being able to see the silhouette. The light make the garment but it cant be felt, because of its weightlessness. Though this idea does not have the make flexibility or movement in it like the air garments.

LIGHT:

Feedback from teachers (also in relation to seminar, maybe there could be a connection):

Look at:

  • representations of weightlessness + material
  • The Shape of Water – movie
  • Olafur Eliasson
  • James Turrell – play with lights
  • Perception of materials
  • fantasy but quiet horrible effects – space
  • history/mythology: Dream of Weightlessness
  • Icarus – mythology
  • The beginning of being able to fly
  • strong drive to be weightless
  • Man crossed atlantic ocean swimming – can’t walk on land anymore (those kind of muscles disappeared)
  • What happens to the body when we fly?

Feedback from peers in class:

Wanting to stay as close to a garment as possible, then choose AIR proposal because the body paint or light solution aren’t wearable

AIR – fan could sit on the shoe and the garment could be longer, if it can’t be on a stick

Do a lot of testing

Timewise: do all three if possible

– interesting to see how weightlessness can become a garment

– good to see how weightlessness can be interpreted

– challenging but good job if you can make it

Experiment!
