Project 3: Retro Futuristic : ODDNESS IN OUR TIME

RETRO FUTURISM IN OUR TIME

FINAL SERIES:

REFLECTION:

What approach did you take?

We approached the project very directly. When we were at Pere Lachaise the idea of retro futurism, especially retro futuristic fashion, was in our heads and we then continued to proceed on the idea. After a little while, we came to the conclusion that the topic or purpose of our early ideas weren’t strong enough. We then worked on it, seen through the text written below in process. Our idea of taking a prediction from their time, early 50s-60s and placing it in our time, to show the difference and the distinction between the worlds, became our focus. As well as debating whether any of our predictions for the future are real.

What part of this project did you enjoy most?

I enjoyed creating the outfit, building the helmet.

What part was most challenging?

The most challenging part was us 4 people having to be on the same level or mind path, where mine was very diverse from the others. It was definitely hard wrapping our heads around what our main idea should be and how well it was portrayed.

Spectrum – open-ended vs. clearly defined design briefs:

I’m definitely on the open-ended side of creativity – I like to be able to work on it and expand the idea by myself. I’m not very good with boundaries, because it tends to stop my creative process. Which happens more often working in teams, having to make sure you are on the same path but its also something to learn from. I’m very adaptable as a person, so if I have to meet certain criteria and follow ideas, that might not be my main focus or interest, I will and of course put my best into it as well. But I try to make the best of it.

Did you have a sense of achievement with this project?

I feel like we achieve a larger understanding of each other by working together and during the last week or so everything was smooth and our minds were more in collaboration because by that time we had gotten use to each other. Our photoshoot went really real and I think our chosen images were very strong together and stated our intention of the project.

The project becomes more evident by having more photos supporting her role in society.

STREAM OF THOUGHTS (Process):

We show how people look back on the past remembering others and how these people expected our lives would look like. It is both about reality; the reality of how we remember them now and how our reality, their future, looks like now compared to their expectations.

Focus: 50s/60s peoples predictions about how we would dress in our day, seen through video with a person dressed with the predictions set in our current life.

Less about the reaction from people of the street.

More about the contrast or connection rather than the reaction of people.

The connection between the two worlds.

Person being lost, not knowing how she handles things in our time.

The meaning:

Predictions change

Can you predict the future?

Why do we always need to predict things?

How can you show the rising of a dead person?

What if a person who lived in 15th century Paris were to come alive again today?

Is the future always better? – we are always going to want more?

Their romantic vision of the future vs how the future actually is, reality.

In what way can it be illustrated that we don’t know whether the future is better or worse? Why do we always assume the future is better? Is that because we need to have hope in the future in order to continue our lives?

How do we demonstrate mistaken futuristic predictions?

How do we want people to react, feel? Why?

How can we do this? Where will we do this?

Are we wrong about our current futuristic predictions?

Why is it important that we were wrong in the past?

Why is society trying harder and harder to predict how to change the future? Are we more scared of what’s to come?

Our inability to predict the future.

Coming with 1960s expectations to nowadays, can a person adapt in the present using expectations from the past?

Our inability/ability to predict the future, based on the past’s predictions.

What ways can we show how they were unable to predict the future, as well as we probably are now?

  • Through having the objects from times back displayed in a way (maybe through video) that tells the viewer that difference that going to happen in our own future.
  • We have to show our failure to predict the future through their inability.
  • By filming a person from the past (with 1960s expectations) in now days Paris, can show that there is no definite answer to what the future will be like.
  • Show different scenarios of how our future could look like
  • Show different wrong predictions of the future (maybe also right predictions)

Why is it important that we were wrong in the past?

Why is society trying harder and harder to predict how to change the future? Are we more scared of what’s to come?

How is predicting the future important?

The utopian view that the past expected.

Showing one day in a life full of wrong predictions.

Its hard to surprise people. – Senario based idea.

Photography series showing the difference

Manipulating different settings – doing our own predictions and showing how they would predict it (photoshop).

Linking part/mini-project:

I would be using our groups materials, the outfits that build for the senarios, photograph:

Materiality

Link between materiality and sci-fi

Materiality of death/afterlife

Scannings

Artefacts (the pants and the gloves) – Performance artefacts

Complementary – responding to a given theme

What can you do with these materials? The opposite of materiality?

Removing color, if it’s reflecting materials.

A series of different materials

The reflection of the dead

So materialistic in nature nowadays, the physical body. Intangible of their bodies.

Pilgrimage and ritual

We are animals by nature: our life are very much tactile

Reflections of materials through scanning and photography.

Showing the predictions from the past through the materials expected to our current materials. Series (book maybe), of a mixture of photography and senses.

INSPIRATION:

A view on how people from the 50s/60s thought we were going to dress in our time, shown in our time through recreation of the objects thought of back then.
