Drawing & Imaging Project.3

For this project we were required to create a visual piece that revolves around the theme “Expansion into Space”. However, we were to utilise a combination of analog and digital techniques learnt in this course.

In order to help us identify what we wanted to portray, we created a mood board that illustrates a basic idea. I decided to focus on the literal meaning of the expansion of space but represent this through the eyes of another individual, who is lost in space as metaphor that illustrates the distance created between human interactions with the improvement in science and technology in a futuristic world.

Reflection

I personally liked working with this project as it gave me the opportunity to work on something I never imagined I would do, a stop motion animation.  Although this was challenging, as I had to create my figure first, sketch it out, photoshop it and the create the video. Most of these were elements I had never worked on before. Hence, I learnt how to use a vast number tools in a single project. Inspite of having several obvious mistakes, through a peer critique helped me identify ways in which I could approach and correct these mistakes.

Reflection:

As an aspiring architect I enjoyed working on this piece as it let me work on not only creating an interior structure but even the designs. For this project I wanted too look into a structure that was rather unusual and out of my comfort zone. Hence, I decided to create a floating room of the future.

Project Description:

Instead of having a project sheet handed to us we had a rather interesting assignment where we were asked to create a project sheet -> Final Bridge Project Sheet_-1lzq7oo where we were asked to create a project and model based on one material, class or object that we liked and disliked working with.

Materials Used:

Paper, glue, plexiglass, foam board, plastic, gold paint and

Reflection:

In occurrence of an unexpected event that took place recently in my life my view on everything changed. When all hop was lost I was asked to look into  this idea of an existence of a spiritual higher being. Something that I’ve had practice of before but never truly believed in it. I wanted to create a connection between this spiritual idea of whether I believe in it and my avatar class. With this idea in mind I thought about how spiritual beings have different avatars. For the next step  I picked one spiritual being that is known to all, where I chose Buddha and read its beliefs and morals and decided to create a 3D representation  of the different Avatars.

In order to gain an idea of the different representations of buddha I walked around the city and entered different stores that had a sculpture of Buddha. I photographed some of them as seen below.

This process also helped me explore different materials used and the texture it brings out, that I could adapt into my final project.

I then began sketching out the avatars of Buddhas from the ones I had seen around.

I wanted use plexiglass for my final model to create the buddha sculptures. However in order to create the piece I had to first trace the sketch on adobe using the pen tool to create the outline so I could then cut them out and then have repeated parts of the sketch outlined separately in order to gain a 3D feature as seen in the image below.

However, the biggest task with this project was not just finding the right dimensions but figuring out how to stick plexiglass onto plexiglass. Once i researched I figured out that the fastest and only possible way was through using a special acrylic glue or acrylic cement.

Project Description:

For this project we were required to create a zine, a self articulated piece of work. The zine is to be created by identifying a social issue from a selected movie and taking a stand on a social issue, where by a multitude of people are affected. The zine is to have both textual and visual content with six pages, including a front and back cover.

Materials Used:

Digital media, paper and ink pen

Reflection:

The first step of identifying the social issue was by re-watching the movie, I realised how critical this step was in order to identify and take notes on how the social issue, for which I choose objectification of women, is illustrated in the movie( Ex Machina notes-1alih90 ). Once I was able to identify my story plot I began to focus on the colours that I wanted to use. I choose shades of pink and purple in order to represent feminism for the cover and last page. As a symbol that feminism is not lost amidst this sort of brutality, where as the pages inside are only black and white that represents the loss of innocence within all this darkness in the world. This process helped in understanding how critical every element is in creating a piece of artwork. The size of the zine is also used to illustrate how such a big issue is often overlooked at.

Avatar Studio Bridge.3

Project Description:

Since we identified the meaning of physical avatars the next step was learning about the environment that these avatars reside in. For this project we explored different neighbourhoods in New York City, through a scavenger hunt. Here we first selected a neighbourhood and then created virtual world. For my project I choose Chinatown one of New York citys most well known neighbourhood. As an outsider to this country I wasn’t aware about the history behind the origins of this neighbourhood. Once I read about the history of Chinatown I was drawn into creating a 3D virtual map of Chinatown that portrays its history.

Materials Used:

Foam Board, Wood, Glue, Paper and Gold Paint

Reflection:

We think of a neighbourhood as a place but its not very often we find ourselves interested in the history behind each neighbourhood. As an outsider to this country I wasn’t aware about the history behind the origins of the neighbourhood that I choose, which was Chinatown. The decline in the mining business in the west coast, drove Chinese immigrants towards the East coast, in particular to Manhattan, New York City. Through next few years Chinese immigrants suffered through harsh living situations, laws and other barriers which are almost unimaginable. Once I read about the history of Chinatown where I was drawn into creating a 3D virtual map of Chinatown that portrays this history. I was able to create this by pulling out and sticking old articles form newspapers and images that illustrate the environment at that time. Through this project I was able to increase my awareness of cross culture, how society around us changes  and we gain a sense of identity of a certain thing or place.
