Day 1

Ian told me that he liked playing one of the Chinese card games called “Heart Attack” when he was young, and he suggested us to play it after class. In order to win the “Heart Attack” game, the main strategy is fast reaction. In order to win, player needs to show the right card which has the same number as he or she calls it. This was my first time to play this type of card game because I was not very interested in playing games. Even though my reaction was slow, I still tried my best which I could.

Day 2

Ian and I cooked two dishes for each other. Ian cooked the “Egg Fired Rice” for me because he thought this dish was one of his unique works. The dish that I selected to cook was the “Egg Tomato Soup” which was one of the traditional Chinese soup. Ian said that this was his first time to cook in New York City, simply because he has been living in a school dorm and there was no kitchen inside of the room. At the beginning of our trials, I assumed that most of boys were usually bad at cooking. Amazingly, the flavor of his “Egg Fired Rice” was extremely tasty and delicious.

Day 3

There are lots of free activities in New York City. After extensively searching online, we found a festival called the “2016 Dumpling Festival” and it sounded very attractive to both of us, and the main reason of that was both of us are crazy about eating a variety types of dumpling. On a Sunday afternoon, we went to the “2016 Dumpling Festival” together new Chinatown. In the venue, it was so crowded, and we excitedly watched the “Dumpling Eating Championship” game.

Day 4

The “Cars” was one of Ian’s favorite movies when he was a child. I never heard about this movie before he told me because I was not interested in cars at all. The movie fundamentally described those cars as human and let them talk and think which I liked it very much. Most of scenes in this movie was hilarious which made me laugh at the whole time. I highly appreciated Ian’s recommendation of this movie, and I truly enjoyed it.

Day 5

I did not know Ian and I both had same major at Parsons as well as we did not know too much about each other until this time we were assigned the group project together. After interviewing him, I essentially understood the underlying reasons of applying Parsons. Meanwhile, he also shared with me about his future plan. Furthermore, we both discussed that how to obtain inspiration from others in order to design a better art piece. Overall, I agreed that he was a very intelligent designer with rich ideas, and I believed that I would learn more stuff from him in the future.

Day 6

We found a cheap karaoke place to go which named “Sing Sing Karaoke” on Lower East Side in Manhattan. Before we went there, Ian told me that he has enjoyed listening music while he was on the train as well as walking alone. He kindly shared with me that Jay Chou has been his favorite male singer in China for a quiet long time. I certainly agreed with him because I used to listen to Jay Chou’s songs all the time. At the beginning of our activity, we could not find Chinese songs in the system, maybe because we were not quite familiar with this place. Eventually, we were able to sing Chinese songs and we truly enjoyed this afternoon.

Day 7

The main adventure for our day is try to chat with strangers on the street about their daily life. We selected a very comfortable area near Newport in Jersey City in order to challenge ourselves. You were expected to see many people peacefully stand by the river and their eyes swept over the river.  Later, we wanted to give some interview or survey based questions to people who were in a group. We made it again! I think it was a fun day but just needed to be aware the safety.

Bridge 1

The memory was chosen to write can be mainly summarized as my hardship of school daily work during my high school.  The name of my art piece was called “Growing”. It was not quite easy to accomplish this project by using the method of collage. The first step I took into consideration was to obtain some clues and inspiration from other artists, and the final decision of my production was to design a scene in order to express my main logic and concept. The second challenge was about the choice of materials would be used. Instead of only using fashion magazines and daily newspapers as the main materials, in addition, brushing sumi ink was developed into one of my unique mechanisms to constitute a more effective background.

On the center of my art piece, you are expected to find a picture of the little girl which represented me while I was at high school as the main focus point. Furthermore, I also mixed some cartoon drawing surrounding this little girl in order to reflect my busy school life. On the lower center of the “Growing”, I inserted some photos of mathematic formulas which were found online. Also, some different size circles which could better exhibit a good amount of pressure I had during my high school. On the top left of this image, I fill in a water color sketch of New York City to symbolize my dream. On the top right of this image, there were some texture of newspapers to show my anxiety. On the bottom left corner, three different color lines can better stand for my various emotion.

Overall, the art piece named “The Jerome Project” by Titus Kaphar contributed a lot to my inspiration as explanation in the beginning before I started the “Growing” piece. The color and the texture Kaphar used were very impressive. From my perspective, the main insight of his work was depression, and mine was sadness as well.
