Lower east side ecological center field trip

On the last Friday, we had a delightful opportunity to visit lower east side ecological center, and this wonderful field trip provided me with a lot of insightful information about sustainable system. This ecology center works toward on organics collection, electronic waste recycling, and stewardship of public green spaces. Especially, we saw many animals such as tortoise, snake and crab. The ecological center’s worker introduces the changes in the environment of New York to us. Greens cover the whole Manhattan in the 1906, but numerous skyscrapers in the Manhattan after 100 years. The huge environment change brings many environment issue. we should improve our environmental awareness in order to protect the environment.

The notice sign above is a reminder for drivers or passengers to be aware of cyclists before they get out of the cars. This design contains two separated parts which are the visual image on the top and texts on the bottom. The part of the top image consisted the left door with half-way opened, and a cyclist approaches to the door. This integrated part represents a scenario of real life which can visually remind of left-sided passengers before they open the door. On the part of bottom text, there a sizeable “LOOK!” on the lower center of the frame. Much bigger size and more highlighted font, much more attention will be attracted. Especially, two letter “O” in the middle of “LOOK” was replaced with a pair of eyes to make the whole sign more standout and isolated.

My inspiration of this design come from two major elements. The first element is yellow cab, and the other is cyclist. Firstly, I draw the orange cab and the beige cyclist on the frame to locate those patterns inside of the red triangle. I want people to pay more attention on this sign, therefore the colors I selected are very distinct. However, the yellow cab and beige cyclist does not match the red triangle, so I re-design an orange rectangle instead of the original red triangle. Orange is the main color of the whole sign in order to make this sign look like a complex object. Next, I add some noticeable words such as “look” and “for cyclist” because people can quickly understand the meaning of sign. Overall, I want to make those words distinct, hence the white color is chosen. The main material to produce this sign will be plastic striker, and it will be placed on the window of a taxi.

UN speech field trip

On last Thursday, we had a delightful opportunity to enjoy speeches from three exceptional environmental public speakers at the United Nation headquarter. They shared with us about their unique experience and their books. Essentially, climate changes are one of the biggest challenges on our earth. Their speech has impressed from different angles, such as Harries and WFF foundation travelled to Greenland to study some negative impacts of current climate changes. Meanwhile, they played a short movie to illustrate that what little things we can do to better protect our environment and prevent some pollution.
