  • A FINAL REFLECTION ON MY SEMESTER ACROSS STUDIO 2 AND SEMINAR 2  (Overall Integrative Seminar and Studio 2 Reflection Post )

Cross Course Reflection LP Post

  • N00607353, that is me. Antonia Groh. Everyday I see this very number as I swipe my ID at the gates to the new school.
When I started here at Parsons in September 2016, I began my journey through the first year. To be part of one of the greatest design school on the planet,  that made me weak in my knees, especially because I worked so hard to get here ever since my elementary school years. So walking through these gates every day, even though it may sound very cheesy, made my day each time.
I am majoring in fashion design, undoubtedly one of the most well-known courses here at Parsons, as one can see from the many established alumnus and Parsons own Wikipedia page. Yes, you heard correctly, Parsons has its own Wikipedia page, and now I am part of it wuhu!As it was my first year here at the New School, I did not exactly know what to expect, because no matter how prepared one is, one never truly knows what it will be like 100 percent until you do it. So when looking back now over the last months of these semesters, I must say I am so grateful to be a part of this amazing program. Apart from the fact that the facilities here are invertible, I am so happy to be part of a community in which I am accepted and understood. This is correct creatively, as well as work ethic wise, as I enjoy the thrill of long nights of working on my project because once it done, it is a feeling of accomplishment that not much else can measure up to.
Furthermore, I was also positively surprised with the way my classes were arranged, particularly as registering for classes in America is drastically different from my home country and the first time dealing with CRN numbers was rather challenging. However, it was a tiny issue which was soon resolved and luckily everything turned out well. Within the time frame of these classes, I have generated a variety of work and feel as if my working methods have evolved along this.
Refining and fine tuning skills I had previously acquired, such as adobe suite, as well as learning new skillets, for example how to operate laser cutting machinery, a 3D printing machine and how to weld, were all part of my experiences here at Parson. Particularly within the first semester when working on my projects for Space and Materiality class, I feel I gathered a vast variety of knowledge of new techniques, as I was working on a project regarding the magnification of three eggs utilizing every day overlooked objects. This project required me to use materials such as q-tips, earplugs and toothpicks and their manipulation using my own techniques and strategies, also inclining the creation of a wood to create, which had to be specifically measured and put together with vigorous attention to detail. Which may sound very tedious, was actually Yan amazing opportunity to gather more skills in generating woodcut objects, hence I was excited to learn new techniques.
Hence I would say, my Space and Materiality class was one of my many highlights this first Parsons year.
Another highlight this year was coding a website from scratch. This was rather challenging, but it was exactly this which made it my favorite project, as it made me require to quickly gain a new set of skill, very particular to a certain process, which otherwise i would not have utilized at this level otherwise.Yet there was another class which truly stood out to me as well. As I am not a born English speaker, I took a mandatory English course, for which I was lucky enough to have the wonderful Pamela Vittero as my teacher, who was honestly one of the best faculty members I have ever been taught by in my entire school life. Her passion for the subject she teaches and personal achievements were truly inspiring. Hence one of my highlights was making her acquaintance and thus meeting one of my new mentors.

  • Overall Integrative Seminar and Studio 2 Reflection Post

  • Regarding my Studio Two and Seminar 2 class, I was thrilled to have chosen system and strategies, as it helped me to further my knowledge of the topic and thus refine many of my skills, particularly in the field of research, as well as writing. Overall, I felt that the studio and seminar classes connected rather strongly this semester. This was particularly due to the connected theme (in my case greenhouses) over both courses. Which was interesting, as last semester this was not so much the case. However, I felt it worked well, as this way a more detailed research was possible as I could focus my attention on one topic, yet broaden my awareness into many directions and thus broaden my horizon. Furthermore, I felt I got a clear understanding of what research is and how I acquire information when researching any topic. Based on my current experience, I would say research is the ‘looking for’ and gathering of specifically relevant information that will explain and advance the project one is trying to generate and acclimate. By this I mean that I understand that research is not only the gathered information but the way of with one finds this information and how one uses and most importantly interprets this knowledge.  Over the course of the semester, I felt I developed a more broad and open-minded approach to researching and understanding systems. Particularly as a maker, I feel as if I have tried new ways of incorporating the skills I wanted to develop further ( such as welding) into my project as a way of advancing these but also because they were relevant to my theme. I feel my concept of both research and my own practice changed slightly over the time of the semester, in the way that I started to research not only historical backgrounds when doing research, but also the ‘small things’ such as materials, surfaces and how they were made and utilized in other scenarios. I feel like this was particularly evident in my final piece as I welded parts of it and had not welded before, hence I had to do research on welding. This I did both online by watching videos and reading about it as well as ‘physical ‘research, as I practiced and watch other students using the welding facilities in the metal workshop.
  •  Studio : Process, Documentation and Reflection Post of Final Studio Project
  • For my final project in Studio 2, my initial idea was to construct a wood board which I would later place my photograph onto.
  • I took these photographs whilst being in vienna, as one of the cities palaces has e beautiful greenhouse from the 18th /19th century in its garden.
  • I then attaching a metal piece to the wood panel so that the piece can be hung up and stitching into the photograph at specific areas. After this I constructed a 3D printing file, printing a ‘real life ‘ version of the greenhouse metal construction seen within my photograph. This way the 3D part will reach out of the actual frame and create a holographic effect when placed upon the piece correctly.  I then would have installed artificial lighting so that the 3D parts are lit in a manner that creates a ‘holographic shadow’, which creates the impact upon the audience, as it creates yet another dimensional layer.
However, as I started to build my explorations and mockups for my final piece I felt it was not as successful visually as I imagined, therefore I explored and brainstormed ideas of how to make it more impactful. When doing so I looked and observed the hologram portrayed at Lee McQueen’s fashion show again.
  • I realized the hologram was generated using glass-hence I felt I should create a sense of glass within my exploration too. This led me to think of plenty ideas of how to incorporate this factor within my piece as it is a crucial part of a holographic image. Yet due to the limitation in time, I could not fabricate a full functioning hologram, hence I decided to alter my idea and rather than creating a full fletched hologram, create the illusion of one. This I achieved by placing a mirror onto a wood panel, and placing a 3D print on top of it, then connecting part to the greenhouse skeleton with its reflection using thread which is relevant due to my research on artist Kumi Yamashita-(image )
this way I created an optical illusion, in which a sort of sense of an alternate reality is given. This is due to the second half of the greenhouse not being present yet feeling as if so. Furthermore, the mirror reflects not only the greenhouse skeleton but also its audience, hence the person(s) observing the structure seem as if trapped inside- which is an homage to a real hologram, in which the light reflection is captured within the glass construction. (like the woman in the hologram for McQueen). I first created a mini version so that I could explore the idea in a functional manner, and also check which materials would work.

  • However, further developing my final plan and final piece, I decided that the hologram would look immature and thus not as successful. Hence I decided to still create a sense of a hologram, yet I did so by placing an image of the inside of a greenhouse inside the frame, onto the mirror, instead of only singularly using the mirror and the reflection of the metal grid placed upon it. To further emphasize this I cut away part of the image so that one could see the image as well as the reflection of the welded metal greenhouse grid.I also added botanicals to the piece to add a 3D element as well as to create another dimension.  This way the feeling of looking into a greenhouse would emphasized and hence be more successful as well as being more relevant to my research question. Also, I feel this way my piece is more impactful as it speaks to the audience member more. Furthermore, I also feel this way the piece became contextually more interesting and successful.
Overall I feel my final outcome is successful and clearly portrays my final thought process and final idea. Furthermore, I feel my ideas process has been clearly observable within my developmental LP posts. If I had more time and was to change something, I feel I would add even more botanicals to the structural metal parts, yet I feel the piece is impactful to the audience the way it prevails now as well. My thoughts moving forward are to continue using the skills I have learned over the last months and utilize them for my next project.

‘Greenhouse window’ by Antonia Groh

My endeavor was to generate a ‘window’ into a greenhouse structure. I did so by creating an artificial environment within a frame so that one could experience the feeling of looking into the interior part of the glasshouse within the comfort of one’s home. This way the sensation of being inside the structure would be ever present wherever the hanging is installed, thus virtually anywhere. The piece is inspired by the beauty obtained by nature, even if captured within a greenhouse. Thus the piece is meant to convey a sense of urgency, representing the ‘window into a lost world’, embodying the need to maintain the health of the planet earth and its botanicals, otherwise one will only be able to experience its beauty through an artificial window like the given. By hanging this piece anyplace, ‘Greenhouse window’ raises awareness, acting as a subtle reminder of the matter, whilst also functioning as a wall decoration to brighten up one’s living room.

Research Question:

The role of the Greenhouse within the environment/

Which role does the Greenhouse play in sustaining a healthy planet?

How will I install the piece to generate greenhouse feel:

I will install this piece by hanging it on a wall rather high up, at an angle, as if one was looking up into the greenhouse.

Time: Stopmotion movie with Tape

For this project, I had to form a group together with two of my classmates, in order so that we could together generate a stop motion animation movie using the only tape on a white wall.

each one of us wrote a story line/ initial script for inspiration, which we later adapted as we merged together our writings. My group had, in all three scripts, dealt with a sense of absence. This was especially apparent also in my piece, as I wrote about the loss of my father in childhood, yet it was interesting to merge this loss with amnesia (the loss of sleep) and the loss/absence of a pet. Even though all three were very different they shared this aspect predominantly the feeling this aspect brings to the human emotion a sense of being caught in time- to explain, by this I mean the emotional illusion of time seemingly not exciting. This sensation, I had described within my piece as ‘timeless bubble’ which became one of the main visuals within the movie. However, to not create a rather morbid movie my group members and I challenged us to tell the story using metaphors which are less obvious than showing a man walk away from a girl or such. (to show my dad’s passing) Therefore, the sense of being stuck in time from a traumatic shock was shown as bubbles and the sense of absence as a piece of toast missing a bite.

This toast was also relevant as it further emphasized the idea that one carries on with their life even after such an event, doing usual duties, yet there seems to be some sort of lacking entity.

Overall I feel the movie represents my team’s message successfully and even though it is a rather slow technique, I felt the process of creating the stop-motion movie was very enjoyable. This was due to the fact that it showed me how to utilize this new skill and helped me understand and appreciate the technique of stop motion.

That’s just how it was. a Labor of the ocean.

Maybe it was just the way I said goodbye that haunted me.

I felt my consciousness ebbing away, feeling as if all the oxygen was drained from my lungs,

just like a timeless bubble had evaporated my entire being. MY EYES SHUT. a hundred billion cells in my brain finally shut off.

His holiday, fatal. His passing, brutal yet peaceful. I could not comprehend how easy it was to manage his death, at least that was my delusional idea.

Even though I could not say goodbye the last time his body embraced mine, I felt his presence.

I see him.Lost within the phantasy of his resurrection, I submerge myself within the dream. a brilliantly polished surface occurs, a beaming reflection of a man, before I could recognize him, his voice gave the identity away, my father

suddenly I sense my hunger, seemingly being magnified towards the toaster. soon I will wake, as he fades into the background and I will lose him again.

Within its brilliantly polished surface, a beaming reflection, yet before I could recognize the man, the voice I heard gave his identity away

Time: Animated Poem

Time: Animated Poem

For the project I had to chose one of my city made poems , and using adobe premier, I started to generate a animated poem movie. Working with premier was fun, I had never used it before, therefore I thought it was really helpful to learn it and utilize a new skill, even though it was rather challenging to use at certain points. Overall I am satisfied with my final outcome, as I feel it created  a visually successfully poem .

The poem I chose to animate was:

Time: Poem Machine

To create the random poem machine, the objective was to generate a random poem, incorporating stragers, only using the machine. The machine should be interesting to use, so that strangers would be attracted to it and want to use it. In order to come up with the design idea I ended up using, I did a lot of development and brainstorming of ideas, as I wanted to use an effect, which would let words stick to a structure with which the stranger would play with.

Ultimately I created finger poem machines, which would depending on how u hold and compose them, create not just one but four different poems at the same time, which also could be read as one long poem. Hand welded by me the structures were made from metal and attached to rings using magnet. Because they looked fun, when asking strangers to participate in my project, a lot of people got very excited and volunteered to help, which I felt was very exciting.

CITY POEM:

For the first project of the semester, the task was to create city poems. This meant photographing street signs and interesting restaurant names etc. to generate a poem singularly using these words. When having taken approximately 320 pictures, I started to play around with the words and utilize my first poem. I then repeated this process creating four poems.

While doing this I realized that the more I repeated the process, the more I felt myself creating more interesting sounding poems. The poems started to have a certain melodic aspect to them , as some were rather random, yet with two other poems I tries to create a more structured rhythm to create contrast. Yet I felt the random one was more interesting as this unproductive nature created a sense of surprise.

Examples for street signs I used to create the poems:

Questions:

Do you feel metal or 3D print would work more successful?

Thread or wire or which material? Where to placeYes print or mirror?

My initial idea was to construct a wood board which I would later place my photograph onto. I then attaching a metal piece onto the wood panel so that the piece can be hung up and stitching into the photograph at specific areas. After this I constructed a 3D printing file, printing a ‘real life ‘ version of the greenhouse metal construction seen within my photograph. However, further developing my final plan and final piece, I decided that the hologram would look immature and thus not as successfull. Hence I decided to still create a sense of a hologram, yet I did so by placing an image of the inside of a greenhouse inside the frame, onto the mirror, instead of only singularly using the mirror and th ereflection of the metal grid placed upon it. To further emphasise this I cut away part of the image so that one could see the image as well as the reflection of the welded metal greenhouse grid.I also added botanicals to the piece to add a 3D element as well as to create another dimension.  This way the feeling of looking into a greenhouse would emphasized and hence be more successful as well as being more relevant to my research question.

Also I feel this way my piece is more impactful as it speaks to the audience member more. Furthermore I also feel this way the piece became contextually more interesting and succesful.

Overall I feel my final outcome is succesfull and clearly portrays my final thought process and final idea. Furthermore, I feel my ideas process has been clearly observable within my developmental LP posts. If I had more time and was to change something, I feel I would add even more botanicals to the structural metal parts, yet I feel the piece is impactful to the audience the way it prevails now as well.

.

The thematic relationship between the elements of the neighborhood and how the neighborhoods different elements relate to each other

The meatpacking district is without a doubt a place for entertainment. Even though it is the home of some lucky townhouse owners, it is also home to most of Manhattans high life nightlife. The main thematic relationship between the meatpacking’s many attractions is that the entire neighborhood seems to work as one big well functioning entertainment machine: one goes there to stay at a hotel or see attractions such as the High-line park, the person then gets caught up in one of the many other attractions such as shopping facilities and restaurants, spending great amounts of money, until the day becomes night and one conveniently can stumble into yet another restaurant for dinner, a stylish cocktail bar for some drinks and finally enter into one of the many nightclubs for some more fun, without having even left the neighborhood. If one chooses to want to repeat this cycle, one can conveniently check into one of the hotels around the area, if one’s budget allows. Furthermore, of course, most people would not do this every day, yet particularly tourists, will fall victim to the meatpacking district’s well-oiled cycle.

a little overall knowledge and history:

The Meatpacking District is one of New York City’s neighborhoods on the island Manhattan. It is a rather small neighborhood running from Horatio street aproximately to west 14th street which only gives it a small diameter. The meatpacking Districts as its own area was first developed around the mid 19th century, as this part of the city had before then been known as being part of greenwich village. Greenwich had been popularas a vacation spot, which helped the area, later known as meatpacking district, to be a familiar spot to many.

MEATPACKING DISTRICT – ITS PECULIARITIES The area is particularly known for its irregular The area is particularly known for its irregular

The area is particularly known for its irregular street patterns, which seems abnormal to the overall geometrical layout of Manhattan streets. This occurrence was due to the clash of the street system of the Greenwich Village. This system prevailed side by side with the Commissioner’s Plan of 1811. The system was put in place to impose a grid on any part of Manhattan which was yet to be developed.

then transitioning into :

history:

MEATPACKING DISTRICT – CIVIL WAR AND ITS INFLUENCE ON THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Throughout the time of the civil war the district was an important location, as various factories produced turpentine and camphene. However, after the war the neighborhood was undertaken rather great changes. These began with the year of 1870, as the meatpacking district then was no longer seen as a ‘wanted’ place to live. Therefore it became a place where multiple family residences were built and industrial buildings were further constructed as the industrialization became more and more prominent. However it was not until 1880 that further developments began to surface in the neighborhood. The old market then known as simply “Farmer’s Market”, where one would buy their meat and other food, relocated, causing the area to become the new ‘hot spot’ for packing plants and meat sales. So by the time of 1920 the area had ben refocused from being a mixture of residential area and industry to being the district one would go to for meat, hence its fitting name meatpacking district. Over time the businesses not related to meat retail, which still prevailed around the area, blossomed and helped the neighborhood to slowly transition into being a now sought after shopping destination.

then activities/things to look at and experience:

THE HIGH LINE PARK

In 1869 another change was undertaken within the area now known as meatpacking district, the elevated railroad line, now known as highline was built. The project to make the old railroad the High line park was along-discussedd and highly debated cause. However, it was finally authorized in 1929, thanks to a plan to improve the neighborhood and make it more desirable again. The completion of this one of a kind project took its time, but was finally completed in 1934, and is now a hot spot for anyone visiting the meatpacking district.

MEATPACKING DISTRICT – RESIDENCES

The first residences within the neighborhood erupted around the time of 1840 and were predominantly townhouses. The neighborhood was rather untypical as is was half industrial and half residential, which was a pattern not a sought after style in the earlier times, but with time this style of neighborhood became more and more typical. As this happened, the neighborhood became more isolated, ultimately forming into its own little district. The main industrial part of the neighborhood district was set more in the western part of the area with industrial buildings and factories.

MEATPACKING DISTRICT -THE SHOPPING HOT SPOT

Undeniably the Meatpacking District went through a transition within the 19th century, particularly in 1990, when the first designer shops opened its doors in the neiborhood. One of the first were Alexander McQueen, Diane von Fürstenberg and Moscino. Therefore the area became more and more fashionable with time, causing many to travel to the neighborhood and it becoming one of new York’s most desirable neighborhoods. The New Yorker even called the meatpacking district “New York’s most fashionable neighborhood” in 2004. Quite a transformation from slaughterhouses to high fashion.

MEATPACKING DISTRICT – NIGHTLIFE

Throughout the 1970’s nightclubs started to pop up all around the neighborhood, now known as meatpacking district, which nowadays are some of the most exclusive destinations for all kinds of celebrities and the rich. The first clubs within the area, however, were mainly targeting homosexual clientele only. Particularly a decade later, it became an area well known for prostitution and drug distribution. However, in 1985 most of these activities were shut down due to an outburst of Aids and other causes.

and

  • How do you move from one page to another? Are there the same navigation links on each page or do they change? Do you have a home button? It’s a good idea to have one:

I thought I could use my map design, so that one clicks on the color and then gets taken to the dedicated area aka bars or restaurants etc. so it would look similar to this, just also including some history: then all the information i wrote above is present when clicking on the icon that is relevant to show this information.
