Routine Space

PROCESS:

For making this video, we started off thinking of places we could represent, places we knew well and frequented. Also, we made a list of the digital mediums we could use for this project and how we could represent each space digitally.

We then decided, that representing the metro would be the most effective since we take it everyday and it plays a big roll in our lives here in paris, especially the Châtelet Station. Also, using video as a medium, really helped us capture the space and represent not only shapes, but also, colors, textures and movement.

Spaces we could explore:

  • Metro
  • A bar
  • Library
  • Museum
  • Apartment

Mediums:

  • Videos
  • Photos
  • Audio
  • Collage
  • Timelapse

Videos we took on the metro:

Meaning of the work:

The piece is meant to represent the space inside the metro. Not any space, but the space of our state of mind during the routine commute we tend to do on a daily basis inside this means of transport. Inside the routine of the metro we tend to focus on different things whenever we are inside, we are usually alone, with time to get in our thoughts, so we pay attention to details or events that we would otherwise not care about because it is a time for yourself. We tend to think or get distracted, with a certain event, such as music, our phone, people talking, steps, etc and forget about the entire path of our commute, and before we know it, one has reached their destination without realizing everything that has happened around them during that journey,  in a place full of life, especially on rush hour. And before we can realize, the metro is on its way to its next destination without us. The visual representation of the sounds is meant to symbolize our journey in the metro, where it becomes such a routine, that we tend to forget the details of it in our mind, without realizing that in every journey something interesting occurred. The music is meant to give insight into one of these events that we often miss, it is the recording of a man playing his flute inside the metro to get money, but his music has beauty and many don’t realize, they are too focused on their own things, or just thinking about how their day will be like. For this reason, there is a radical change in atmospheres, and one hears the metro left because it represents that brief moment in time, where the beauty in our daily routine commute arises, and if we don’t pay attention it is very easy to miss. The train does not wait and every wagon has a different story.
