Curiosity Journal Day 4 (Seminar)

DAY 4

Today I went to the Louvre with a friend of mine to see artwork because she is studying Art History. We strolled around the museum for quite some time, she continued to explain every artwork and I listened to her mesmerized by her understanding not only of the techniques used but also about her knowledge in the history behind every painting. She went on and on about Napoleon and the Greeks and the Renaissance and Michelangelo…

But for a moment I stopped and started thinking. These were all marvelous stories but as my friend explained to me people painted them and therefore there is no actual proof of the event and therefore these paintings and all this history my friend was telling me became very subjective. The stories told here, are what the artist wanted to show. If we could go back in time i’m sure we would be very surprised at how ugly many kings were and how stories truly unfolded.

But then I realised, that our society nowadays is practically the same. “We have photographs though” some may say. This hasn’t stopped us from modifying pictures making ourselves prettier with programs like Photoshop. Editing and the tools we have nowadays make our feed on social media fake and show a version of ourselves that isn’t real. We haven’t really changed self conscious and self awareness issues over the years, if only we have made them worse.
