TIME

PRESENCE:

For this TIME project we were asked to create presence related to Paris. We thought about creating presence through traces. As humans we leave traces in many different ways:

  1. Trash
  2. Footsteps
  3. DNA
  4. Shadow
  5. Food
  6. Carbon footprint…

Our first statement was this one:

We have been asked to choose a site in Paris where we can create or emphasize presence. First of all, what is presence? It is the state or fact of existing, occurring, or being present. How is presence created? What are the characteristics of places where presence is created? We’ve decided to create and emphasize presence by demonstrating the experience of leaving traces and how we leave a trace in the city. We also aim to creatively represent the the small moments that leave our trace in the world. Showing how we live our lives, and ultimately where we go. Through a very general representation we want to tell a personal intimate story. We would like to start by exploring these moments with traditional diary style journaling. One of our group members will collect at specific elements throughout their day, and detail the intimacies of the space they are in – the dirty clothing piled next to their bed from the night before, the tea wrapper that they stuffed at the bottom of their bag, the way that they feel on a crowded metro at 8am etc. We will collect these items and line them up letting people create the story they like from just seeing them. We’re also playing with the idea of listing everything the person touches throughout the day and hanging those lists about the objects.

However, growing from that idea, we decided to talk about something very important in our society: climate change and pollution. We thought that a way we leave traces is through the things we consume as food. Therefore, we created a Stop-Motion video were each of us, personally and without looking at what the others had eaten, we would recreate the most important meal of the day for us, in my case being breakfast. We all eat very differently, I have a more mediterranean way of approaching what I eat, Faith is vegan so her way of eating is more careful and Clemente is trying to build body muscle and strength so he has to eat a lot of carbs and heavy meals. Also, we decided to attach to each stop motion a brief explanation of where each of the food elements came from and therefore the footprint they leave in the world if they have been transported. Thinking about the true cost of that product and how long it has had to travel for me to be able to eat it. Finally, we decided to recreate and portray the trace of what the meal actually was at the beginning. How it was laid out and how we initially set out the plated and drinks, forks and knives… all the things that we left once we ate the meal (even if it is a bit disgusting)

PROCESS of the editing of the photos. Wanted to make them bold and clear. I wanted the food to stand out since it was not just one plate, there were several and the background could distract form the actual point of view.

FINAL PROJECT:

This is the final outcome of how the traces of the three meals looked like and a video projected and played on the wall on top of each meal showing how we had eaten it. This project touches on culture, habits, leaving traces and sustainability.
