DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
To begin developing the piece we first began brainstorming on what kind of experience we wanted to portray through this Virtual reality paradigm. After deciding we wanted to focus on the idea of dreams, we began developing a series of sketches of what we could create to express the experience of dreaming. We developed sketches based on ideas of helmet like structures as dreams occur within the mind when we are in a stage of sleep. Because we had to work with wood we thought of ideas of how to create structures purely made out of wood pieces, but developing a head like structure conjoined with a hand restrainer to represent the uncontrollable state of mind in dreams, meant that it would take too much time and too much wood, but also it would not look organic and dreams have no restrains or clear like structure, they are of natural form, with no boundaries, as it is hard to make round like shapes with straight pieces of wood. For this reason, we decided to incorporate the wood within a ski cap as it would maintain the natural form of the head, like a helmet whilst implementing the elements of wood. All the thing wood structures surrounding the organic shape are meant to represent the intense emotions one can experience through dreaming, with no clear path, as one may jump from a state of mind to another in the same dream or have a wide range of memories and emotions being experienced simultaneously in the same dream-like state of mind. The structure is then conjoined with the hand restrainer, to represent this uncontrollable mix of emotions and recollection of memories one can experience.
FINAL PIECE:
Burgundy is a color which is positive if one notices it while they sleep as it represents that one has an amazing potential for power. Colors are associated with the intensity of feelings and emotions. Because Burgundy is a shade of red it can be correlated with intense emotions. associated with strength, passion, courage and high energy. If one experiences this color in their dreams it might be a representation of intense emotions and spiritual feelings, whether it is positive or negative. This is why we decided to use a burgundy red hat as it correlates with the virtual reality experience we wanted to portray through our wooden structure.
The structure we created is meant to allow one to enter their dreams, experience the feeling one has whilst dreaming. As when one dreams, it is the time we can experience our true inner self, regarding our emotions, physical and psychological state of mind. The only problem with dreams is that most of us are unable to have control over them, and often, one is unable to recall what they had dreamt. This structure is meant to represent the restrain one goes through whilst dreaming, as we get to expirience ourselves in our purest form but without control over this expirience. Also, the fact that our dreams are often associated with our true inner self, means that when one wakes up, and lives their ordinary lives, they do not exhibit their full inner self due to the restrains of society and social stigmas which may restrain us from fully expressing our pure state of mind. This virtual expirience is meant to allow one to enter this dream like state where their purest state of mind is exhibited but at the same time represent the restrain of such experience with the hands being locked unable to have full control with this state of mind.
