Mötorhead Final Project

For the past few weeks the class has worked on creating packaging for an artist to promote a re-release of a single. Our song had been “Ace of Spades” by  Mötorhead. We used six images for inspiration which included the Jack Daniels logo, a rock on hand, speed metal symbol, speed freak symbol, coat of arms for the town Lemmy Kilmister was born in, and dead man’s hand.

Below are some links of our designs and inspiration in progress:

There was a debate on whether or not my partner and I would make both of our packaging designs for our project. We wanted to make the first design only so that we could focus our energy on getting our T Shirt printed. We knew once we had the shirt finalized that it would come out well and hoped to produce a complete product. In the end we integrated our second design with our first design by creating a card to pull out with the items on the inside.

We had an issue with getting our T-shirt printed because silk screening would cost around $100 for one T-shirt and the price only lowered if we bought it in bulk. We tried to print black ink on a white shirt instead with a digital printer, but it didn’t give the same heavy metal feeling the white ink on black did. We finally found a place in New Jersey called Flexy Custom Apparel to cute iron ons for us, but they only had the tools to print the parts of the design that were thick enough. The rest of the design that was too complicated I printed out onto a different type of iron on paper at home.

Another issue we had when making our final boxes was that in the design I had accidentally made the UPC code too small and we already constructed the boxes before we could reprint them. So my partner and I decided to make a sticker and print them at the computer lab to cover up the mistake.

This project was a bit of a challenge as both my partner’s and my own styles contrast a bit from the band. My partner tends to appreciate more of a minimalistic style and I like more pop punk artists rather than rock. However, even with different interests  I think our final results came out well. We ended up really trying to play up the biker side of the band through our designs.

MOTÖRHEAD “ACE OF SPADES” RE-RELEASE FAN PACK CONCEPT DRAFT 2

Concept 1

For this second iteration we didn’t edit the files too much other than resizing some of the thickness of lines. We did create a promotional packaging using the same images and will be shaped like a card box to hold all the items (CD, Poster, Tshirt).

Concept 2

We put  more effort in editing this design. I finished illustrating the skeleton so that the drawing had a full and more defined body. Instead of the hat detail we used Elise’s Jack Daniels and Ace of Spades to border the design in the poster. We also did not want the UPC Code to look like it was just slapped on, so we decided to try playing around with that as well. We wanted the TShirt design to be a bit more subtle so we ended up making a small Tshirt pocket on the front which commemorates Lemmy Kilmister and the back would have the illustration.

Another addition to the cd packaging we added was now the illustration is a folder to hold the cd and the spade will be a shiny metallic silver. Before we had the spade as cut out and the cd would come in two sleeves. So that the illustration was placed right under the spade. Instead the packaging will now be a book style.

Motörhead “Ace of Spades” Re-Release Fan Pack Concept Draft 1

For our final project in Product, Packaging, and Promotion; the class was placed in pairs to create three concepts of a T-shirt, fold up poster, CD, and sleeve.

My partner and I decided to split the work by creating each creating our own individual concepts and then the last one we would collaborate together. For my piece, I based my design off of the back of a traditional poker card.

For our second piece, Elise had tried to lean towards making a tribute album for the lead singer Lemmy who died just last year in December.

During the 80’s, a lot of the famous rock albums covers were heavily painted with very loud illustrations and for the last piece we tried to capture that feeling from that time period.

Matchbook Final

For the past couple of weeks in Product, Promotion, and Packaging the class had worked on the completion of creating matchboxes for a restaurant that had been assigned to us while using elements found throughout the restaurant to convey a certain theme. My restaurant had been Three of Cups, which is a moderately priced Italian Restaurant with a lounge and bar below it. The pictures items that I used to represent the restaurant were a brown tin ceiling of the restaurant, rock band stickers pasted on the ceiling of the lounge, brick pizza oven, candles, pizza, and swords.

Originally I had made a digital layout to create the concept of my design, but as I played around with it I realized that I would prefer to just hand draw it as I did not like the flat look of my prints. I had recently been following a Youtube channel called DramaticParrot who creates beautiful illustrations of cartoons and Disney characters using color pencils and decided to give her method a try.

The trickiest part of this project was probably sizing. that round matchbox worked out well, but I had a little trouble when it came to the pizza box. My first version wouldn’t stay close; probably because the tabs were not the best size. So I decided to play around with belly wraps. I then got the idea to make a second pizza box and use a vellum paper as the belly wrap and draw the image of the candles and stove onto it so it’s as if it turns into a separate packaging. I definitely like this design better.

Here are links for my process of layouts and inspirations:

This process was a lot of trial and error, but overall I like the last results and appreciate the process it took me to get the piece to where it is.

Matchbox Packaging First Layouts

This week’s assignment for Product, Packaging and Promotion was to come up with 4 different concepts for our Match booklets and well as create mock ups for how the pieces are to be built. I built three different shapes of books and boxes. One book takes the shape of a pizza and the other is just a traditional square shaped book. My next design is shaped like a pizza box to fix with the main food of the restaurant and the last one is a cylindrical shaped box.

Three of Cups Photos and History

Three of cups is an Italian Restaurant in the East Village. Surrounding it are many other international restaurants, bars, and cafes. Below the restaurant is a lounge that has happy hour everyday and live music as well as an open comedy show on Wednesdays. The upper restaurant has a very warm atmosphere and medieval themed decorations along the walls. Brick and wooden walls line the place. The restaurant also has candle lighting throughout. The lounge is much darker and has old band stickers plastered on the ceiling and band posters and creepy masks along the walls.

The Lounge attracts many punk-rockers on week days and “weekend warriors” – http://nymag.com/listings/bar/Three-of-Cups-Lounge/

For the food, they serve primarily pizza and pasta and make use of their wood burning oven.

“The name is derived from an Italian deck of playing cards called “Modiano” which dates back to the 14th century. The Three of Cups is a wild/trump card in the games Scopa and Briscola. The deck is similar to the tarot card deck.” – http://www.threeofcupsnyc.com/

Three of cups opened in December 1992 by Phil Hartman and Santo Fazio who used old family recipes to make their creations.

Weekdays the place opens at 5pm for dinner, but on weekends you can go earlier for brunch.

Matchbook/box Inspiration

Bower and Wilkins P3 Headphones Packaging

For the first couple of weeks in the Product/Packaging/Promotion the goal was to pick a product that we think functions well, come up with three packaging concepts and then make these concepts into a tangible item.

For my product I had decided to pick a pair of headphones:

DSC05122 DSC05123

The reason this had become my item of choice are the following:

  • The headphones are foldable, which make them more compact and skinny so that they are easy to carry around.
  • I prefer headphones over ear buds. Although, ear buds may be more portable, I enjoy the sound quality coming from over the ear head phones better. They are also still transportable even if they are slightly bigger.
  • They have a more sleek design on B&W headphones in comparison to other companies’ headphones such as VModa
  • They are customizable in color
  • Although item I displayed was B&W P3 headphones, B&W offers another design called the P5, and instead of collapsible earpieces, they have rotatable ones for the comfort of the user.
  • Memory foam ear pieces allow added comfort due to the pieces being able to morph to the shape of the user’s ear
  • You can switch the cable easily if the cord breaks by removing magnetic ear pads from the headpiece and easily replacing them.
  • B&W has a more open sound so it doesn’t completely block out all the noise coming from the outside such as traffic, people talking, etc.
  • P3 has better sound quality than a lot of head phones which typically push forwards on the bass of the music, where as these  headphones focus on the vocals.

The first project was to test typography and create three different concepts and only use Black and White in the design (no colors or grey scale). Another catch to the project is that we may not be able to say what the product is or the company on the box.

I had decided to create three different box designs as well as a bag design to be created by fabric.

The next part of this assignment was to start adding in color and patterns into the design. I had decided at the time to go with something simple and have the boxes and bags a dark grey and the typography color reflect the customizable color options the P3 offers. My other choice was to have the Box or bag  different colors and the type face white.

The last concept before the final was to play around with imagery. I did not like how this outcome came out, so I created only one design with this. Instead I decided to continue playing around with color and patterns.

For the mock designs I had created both the bag and the second box design. When creating the bag I intended to print the typography straight onto the bag, but due the messy process, I instead created a belly wrap for the packaging.
