Project 1 “Theory of derive”

“The Theory of Derive”

“Harmony of the Patterns”

The project is about the combination of standing out and blending in. To express the idea, I made three approaches to know what really fits on this project.

1st Approach

“Pleasure of Art”

When I went to the Parais-Royale, the trees cut my attention. The figures were extremely organized as the architectures in the city. The bird on the left bottom is the painting on the ground that I found around the Louvre. It was already faded since people walk passed by. I found it is interesting because the woman who draw it was right next to the picture of the bird, drawing Disney characters. People were impressed and taking pictures of the Disney, but nobody paid attentions to the bird. However, the similar situation occurs in museum. Many people go to museum, look at the artworks for a second, and walk pass by. Are we spending so much time and effort just to let people walk pass by?

2nd Approach

“Gap of Generation”

I realized there are a few modern buildings in the city while the most of the buildings are old. Somehow the modern buildings were blending in to the atmosphere, so I photographed them to study how it works.

In this photograph, there is a modern building on left side of the photo. Because the material was glasses that reflect the view, it almost completely blind in the area.

In the middle of the picture, you can see the same building as the one before from different perspective. that is how it looks like from a bit further away, but it is sort of hard to point at the modern building as the first impression. That is the whole point of “blending in”

3rd Approach

“Harmony of Patterns” (Experimental)

While the city has many attractive figures, I captured my attention to the rectangle patterns of city and unique statue of the baby Poseidon. The statue was unique since many statues are modeled by adults, but it somehow fits with atmosphere. So, I decided to pursue how this two elements work.

First Attempting

I tried to figure out how the composition works between two different medias by simply drawing them right next to each other.

The development The final project of "Theory of Derive"

I decided to put the detail of the buildings inside of the figure by photoshop. The background is the idea that I wrote on my notebook for this project. The two sentences represents the beauty of two different elements, even though if they are two opposite things.

Reflection

The hardest part was to put the idea together. Since I didn’t have any specific direction I wanted to go for this project, I struggled to come up with how I propose my idea to one project. Once I knew what to do for this project, it became super fun. I was familiar with photoshop, so I was confidence of what I was doing. The hardest part to make this project was to choose the background. I was thinking about using my book as the background, but it end up using the photo of the building. The part I would fix was the detail of the project. I found many lags once I printed out. If I do the project on photoshop next time, I would print it out first, and fix it.
