Project 2 “Celinda”

This project is about my classmate, Celinda.

She believes in spiritual world, and practice with sacred objects.

The action is cultural uniqueness that not many people have in common, so I started to document her objects in her room.

I also realized that she uses many orangish color for her decoration, so I emphasis the objects that have color of orange.

This is the polar bear doll she has, and she mentioned that she carries around wherever she goes. It was white, so I made it black and white.

She said that she lives close to the ocean, and water helps her to calm down.

So here is what I made after the interview.

I made a document about Celinda by showing her sacred objects, water on her hand, and the polar bear. Since I have noticed many orange color in her room, I made everything else black and white to emphasis the orange color.

I put the an illustration of the recorder since it is her hobby to collect it.

I decided to use simple photos at the end. I tried to make the best composition, and it came out with many meaning. I took colored pictures for orange because she used warm color a lot in her room. Others, I used monotone to emphasis the color of orange. At the left bottom, you can see the fire goes up, and the water at the right top goes down. I chose silver flame for the water because it is the only photograph that represents element.

It was my first time to document someone’s environment, so I used photograph as my media. It was the most simple approach, but I believe it worked the most as I could apply my style in it while I document Celinda purely. I enjoyed to look for the composition of the pictures. I just played around how the photos work together, and I found the best one I like at the very end. It made me feel like discovering something new. It was hard to figure out what I wanted to do because it was hard to document her without making the project more of “me.” The pace of this project was good. I didn’t have to rush, but I still have to think about it all the time. I believe it is bad to stress for making artwork because it is hard to make good work when you are in rush. I really enjoy doing work by myself because I don’t have to be bothered by other ideas. If I decided to make something, I want to make it in the way I decided. I wouldn’t take away this project for future work, but I learned that taking photo is one of the best way to document stuff.
