Lab Project; Parc de la Villette

Parc de la Villette in 19 arrondissements used to be a slaughterhouse, and architect, Bernard Tschumi won the design competition of this place in 1982 to 83 with the opinion of the deconstructionist philosopher Jacques Derrida. The red foiles in the photographs are the work of deconstructivism, and the photos are about documenting the grid system based on the foiles. The photos are taken to frame multiple foiles. Photos in the first half of the video are mainly taken from the bridge above the street to show more depth into the photos to capture more targets. However, there are two pictures that contain foiles at the northern gate of la Villette. After these two images, the last half shows the south part of the park, in which there were more foiles than the north. Some photos only contain a foile, and it is to show the shape rather than the atmosphere. To take the photos, the phone camera was used, to capture the wider range of frames. (reference; Samsung Galaxy 10) To emphasize the foiles, blue, yellow and green are desaturated, and red is saturated. In addition, there are red squares on the map to show which foiles are in the photo. The sound is the natural sound of Parc de la Villette when there is nobody. It was taken at a corner of Parc de la Villette, by the east south side by the river. To compare how quiet it is during the recording, the producer of this audio stumped a leaf on the ground around 00:20 second. The sound of a specific area in the park and the photographs of the areas with multiple foiles creates a difference in perspective. It was recorded on Thursday afternoon at a passway in the park, where nobody passed while recording. The differences between how the photos were taken and how the sound was recorded express the urban concept of Park de la Villette. La Villette was designed to create atmospheres from the coincidences made by three layers of urban constructions. Those layers don’t have any common purpose, which the coincidences happen randomly. The gap between photos and sound expresses the concept of differences in the layers, and the coincidences can be recognized depends on individuals. Just like the parc de la Villette relied the functionality on people who actually use the place.
