Project 4 “Autumn Beats”

For our project 4, we decided to make a remake of Jackson Pollock.

To figure out his style, we watched few videos on Youtube, and read articles about him.

Here is what we found out.

1. He listens to Jazz music while he paints

2. He was a big alcoholic.

3. There are certain ways to make “dripping” art; he doesn’t paint on a canvas, but he drips paint on canvas.

4. He preferred the nature, and he also had drawn outside.

The best way to figure out his style is to commit painting. First, we all draw individually to see how it works.

…and we all painted the same canvas at the same time.

So we somehow figured out the way Jackson Pollock drew.

However, we still wanted to put our style into the work since it is a remake. So we decided to express ourselves into a huge canvas, about 2m x 5m. We wanted to have the influence of our generation, so we listened to modern music on the street in Paris where there were many graffiti arts. By doing that, we tended to have a sense of the city instead of nature, but still using the method that Jackson Pollock used.

and here is how it came out.

We made “Autumn Rhythm in 2017.”

We drank alcohol while we were painting to have a closer feeling to Jackson Pollock. Since none of us is a big drinker, we felt that it was necessary to drink alcohol, so that we can express our emotions better without having a limits.  The hardest part of this project was to wait for it dry. The weather was not perfect, and we waited 7 hours to dry. Around 12 p.m., I saw a homeless guy walking back to his place right next to our paint, so I asked him to keep eyes on our paint until the morning. I gave him rest of whiskey, water, and few coins. He was happy to watch out for the canvas, so we all went back to home. Sometimes it is nice to believe strangers. Next day in the afternoon, I went to place and the canvas was safely there. I didn’t see the guy, but it gave me a warm feeling. By doing this project, I have relearned not to judge people before I get to know the person.

…So that was the guy lol

Reflection
We worked great as a group because we were all very excited about the project and could not wait for the outcome. Throwing paint around while listening to music and drinking was a lot of fun on its own, so much that we even decided to throw it at each other.  The adventurous way to the Petit Ceinture and protecting the painting made it even more exciting, such as being at this amazing place. As we invested so much time and money into it it felt extremely rewarding to finally see the outcome and we are all very proud of how it turned out.
