THE FRAME

THE FRAME.

BRAINSTORMING PROCESS:

For this project we were asked to work around the frame. How we frame, what we frame and why we Fram images or videos. I started off thinking what could be a Frame. The things that came to mind were:

  • Frame on a painting
  • Frame on a picture
  • Window frame
  • Viewfinder on camera
  • Theatre stage
  • Cinema frame
  • Our own phones…

All of these, were really physical and literal frames. How could we represent our moods and psychological feelings and emotions in the way we frame things? I then started thinking about why we frame things. I thought about the following reasons:

  • We want to direct our focus
  • The surroundings aren’t interesting enough
  • Need to create mystery or suspense
  • To direct the attention of the viewer.
  • To cut out unnecessary objects like microphones, cameras, or even mistakes that have occurred.

It was then when I started to think about the things that go on outside of the frame. Sometimes that could be interesting as well. I thought about doing an installation where the camera focuses on a black screen, so if you look into the cameras viewfinder you will only see black. However, if you look at the surroundings and what is projected outside of the frame or the cameras viewfinder, many things go on.

Not took a different approach. For the initial brain-storming she started of thinking about a very complex and abstract idea of assembling cameras as frames and experimenting with “frame art psychology”. In these text, she explained her brainstorming and idea process to me:

NOA´S “BLENDER” EXPERIMENTATION:

Noa, took her idea further by trying to experiment with “Blender” and deconstructing the camera as she said in the Instagram texts. She went on to do a 3D model of her camera and tried to figure out how the app works creating a whole explained presentation of her idea and her process.

REACHING OUR FINAL PROJECT:

Finally, we put both of our ideas together and started to do some experiments with videos we took of our weekend. The weather, the sky, going in and out of the metro, peoples feet, walking down the stairs, going into school… ordinary things that defined our day to day lives and therefore define us. The final video idea we worked on together was the following:

FINAL CONCEPT:

After this video, we started thinking about the idea of using subjectivity and personal views of the world. We started to think of how even at the same time, in the space space and with the same people, we see things differently, even colors, shapes… Maybe I identify red in a different way someone else does. We asked different people to send us 25 horizontal pictures they took from their daily lives and send them to us, as well as their eyes. This way, people could tell their story not through their mouths but through what they see. They could tell their story through their eyes, from what they personally have perceived, from their subjectivity.

FINAL PROJECT PROTOTYPE:

This was the first prototype we did. We wanted to make it better by using horizontal pictures and maybe cutting the eyes out putting the images on the back. The left eye is supposed to represent the images seen in these peoples daily lives and the other eye is supposed to represent a camera, like a perceptive and time passing by.

FINAL PROJECT:

The Final project just represents the same the prototype does but the images in the left eye are horizontal making it more aesthetic and more in the shape of the eye.

EXHAUSTING AN ITEM OF CLOTHING:

This item of clothing belonged to Lourdes García-Salmones, mother of Patricia and Jaime Sánchez-Lozano. Married to Pablo Sánchez-Lozano and daughter of María Fernández Morodo. It is a size S/M from the brand CityBird located in London. The item of clothing is made up of 100% viscose, should be hand washed with cold water  and never tumble dried or ironed.

The color is a shade near to the one of an eggplant. The thread used is a bit shiny, not matte. It is intricately made by knitting different threads together and with transparent beading sewn into the threads. It is meant to be tied in the front with two loose thick threads that end in three beads. The front therefore, has two sides that are attached at one point.

Lourdes bought this item of clothing in 215 Mare Street London E8 3QE United Kingdom when on a trip with her mother and daughter. She bought it but never wore it because she did not like how the item was see-through. However, her daughter decided to wear it a lot and has now become the owner of this garment. It seems like an item intended as nightwear, not only for the color but also because of the beads and the way they make the garment sparkle a little bit. Probably since the item is quite see-through it is meant to be worn with a garment underneath. It has short sleeves that end half way along the bicep, therefore, it is probably not an item meant to be worn in winter or in very cold places. It is not very long, its bust length finishes right above the waist. Also, it is not very fitted, it is meant to be somehow loose, like a sort of cape.
